Chapter 108 Adding Fuel to the Fire
In the midst of chaos, she recognized the figure on top of her as Elijah.
“What’s happening to you?” she asked.
Elijah seemed not to hear, forcefully tearing off her clothes. He resembled an enraged beast, wild and dominating. Freya struggled, but in his presence, her strength became insignificant. A chill ran through her as her garments slipped away. Her entire naked body lay exposed before him.
Her eyes moistened, her voice hoarse, “Elijah, why are you treating me like this?”
“Shouldn’t that be my question? You made your father kneel just to divorce me. Is that how much you want to leave, Freya?” His voice carried a chilling tone as if seeping from his throat.
Freya’s heart skipped a beat. Did Leo kneel before Jack Silverton for her divorce?
Her chest tightened, making it hard to breathe.
Elijah, gripping her jaw forcefully, questioned, “Haven’t I been good enough for you? Is your heart that difficult to warm? Hmm?”
Freya looked into his eyes and saw disappointment, loneliness, and heartache. She trembled, wanting to say something to him. Yet, at the brink of speaking, she couldn’t find the words. She gritted her teeth, trying to hold back the tears forming in her eyes. “Yes, I just want to divorce you. Ugh…”
He forcefully intruded. She winced, biting her lip hard, suppressing any further sounds. Elijah kissed her with a fierceness that echoed his inner turmoil. Freya hovered between heaven and earth. She gave up struggling, despite the pain and his severity. She didn’t hate him at all. In this moment, she felt Elijah’s madness, stemming from where it came.
He resented himself for wanting a divorce, for wanting to leave him. And in this moment, she felt love. Reaching for his neck, she embraced him, ignoring their grievances and resentments and sinking into this moment.
Freya complied with him. In their entanglement, she felt an uncanny familiarity with Elijah. When she tried to recall, Elijah forcefully claimed her, pulling her thoughts back to reality.
…
After it all, Elijah rolled off, got dressed, and left without staying in the room. Freya, left lying in bed, felt sore all over. Hearing Elijah’s departure, she stayed silent. She looked up at the ceiling, eyes filled with moving emotions. Slowly, she closed her eyes. A self-deprecating smile tugged at her lips.
Once, she despised women who lacked self-respect. Now, she had become one. In just a year, she had been involved with two men. Her nose tingled, and she found herself on the verge of tears. Perhaps, every step was a misstep. If she had held herself back that night, she wouldn’t have gotten pregnant. Without a pregnancy, she wouldn’t have considered keeping the child. Now, she wouldn’t have a child.
She sighed deeply, eyes closing. A crystal tear slid down her cheek, disappearing into her hair. This night, Elijah didn’t return to the villa.
In the morning, when Xander arrived at the office, Elijah stood by the French window. His tailored suit was wrinkled, and his usually neat white shirt hung loosely on him, a far cry from his usual impeccable appearance.
Xander approached. “Mr Silverton, why are you here so early today?”
Elijah responded with an unrelated question. “Xander, why do you think Freya wants to leave me?”
Xander hesitated. Elijah had always been proud and had never bowed to anyone. This was the first time Xander had seen him like this.
“Maybe she has some feelings for you, but because of your past actions, she is reluctant to admit it?” Xander suggested.
Elijah knew there was a layer of truth to that. Especially after her miscarriage, caused by him. However, her determination to divorce him, going so far as to make her father kneel for it, was unbearable. He couldn’t withstand her willingness to let her father kneel just for her divorce.
Freya’s heart seemed as solid as a rock. Elijah didn’t dare to mention the events of that night. If he did, would she hate him even more?
“Shall we test whether she is concerned about you?” Xander suggested.
“How?” Elijah turned around to ask.
“If she only hates you, she won’t care if you’re with another woman. But if she has a good impression of you, she’ll definitely be jealous.”
Elijah frowned. “What kind of twisted idea is that?”
Xander defended himself, “I thought it was a good idea.”
Elijah sighed. “You go and do it, but handle it well.”
“Yes, sir.” Xander replied.
“By the way, have they found Liora Valentine?” Elijah suddenly changed the topic.
“Still searching.”
“We must find her at any cost,” Elijah said, a sinister undertone in his words.
“It was my negligence that allowed Rylan Hawke to exploit the situation,” Xander admitted guiltily.
In the villa, Freya stayed home today. Following the doctor’s orders, she did leg exercises. She could walk now, as long as she avoided strenuous leg activities. However, today, she found it challenging to concentrate. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. Her mind felt foggy, and she occasionally checked the time as if waiting for something. Or perhaps she was expecting someone?
Linda noticed her distraction and teased, “Madam, you’ve checked the time dozens of times this morning. Are you waiting for Mr Silverton to come back?”
Freya hurriedly denied, “No, I’m not.”
“I’ve been counting, you can’t deny it,” Linda chuckled. “This is how couples should be.”
Freya lowered her gaze. “What should a couple be like?”
“Just like you are now, looking forward to your husband coming home early,” Linda grinned.
Freya asked, “Is my attitude that obvious?”
“Well, what do you think?” Linda said. “I think couples should be open. I don’t know why you keep a distance from Mr Silverton If you have any secrets, you should tell him. If he can accept it, great; if not, at least you both have clarity.”
Freya bit her lip. “I’m afraid he’ll hurt…”
She was afraid Elijah would hurt her child.
She had witnessed Elijah’s anger before.
“But hiding is not a solution, right?” Linda reasoned.
Freya thought Linda made sense.
Seeing her wavering, Linda added fuel to the fire, “Why don’t you go find him? After all, your training is done for the day.”
Freya succumbed to Linda’s persuasion and impulsively had the driver take her to find Elijah. Standing in front of Headence Group’s entrance, she realized she had been impulsive. Just as she considered leaving, Elijah walked out of the building. She couldn’t avoid him and had to force a greeting.
But before she could speak, she noticed a young and beautiful girl behind Elijah. The moment Elijah saw Freya, he reached out and embraced the girl at his side.
