Chapter 41
TREYTON
I am crushed. She chased his scent, not mine. She didn’t even know I was there. When I saw her all I could think was mine, she didn’t even smell me at all. What the hell is going on? I can’t love her like this and she is not my mate. It doesn’t make any logical sense.
When I fall back in my bed I want to just die. How is this possible? I can’t even think straight. She ran to him.
My mom comes in a few minutes later, with a big smile on her face. “Well, what happened?”
I turn away from her. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
I can hear the confusion in her voice. “What happened? I am sure she didn’t reject you, so what happened?”
“She isn’t my mate.” I choke on the words. My heart aches to say them out loud.
“That’s not possible.” She sounds direct now. Like I must have mixed something up.
I turn and look at her confused. “What do you mean not possible? Of course it is possible. I don’t get how I could love her this much and she not be, but there it is. When she shifted she took off to the west, I was in the east. Justin was in the west. I made sure my scent came straight to her, yet she still sniffed him.”
“No, he must be confusing her somehow.”
“How mom? She didn’t know it was him. She just followed her nose.”
“No, that isn’t how this is supposed to go.”
Now, I am even more confused. “Well, that’s what happened. She shifted into this gorgeous white wolf and caught his scent. They ran off together.” I feel like balling my eyes out.
My mom looks scared. “No, that’s not possible.”
“Mom, why do you keep saying that? It is possible. I hate it, but that is the way it is.”
“No.” She screams. “That is not how it was supposed to be. Fuck.” My mom doesn’t swear. Why the fuck is she losing her cool like this? It’s like she is contorting into a beast. “It must be because she is a white wolf. That’s why it didn’t work. Shit, why didn’t I think of that?” She has started pacing my room.
“Mom, what the hell are you talking about?”
“She was supposed to be yours. He was supposed to suffer.” She growls.
“Mom, what are you talking about? You don’t make any sense.”
“I am not your mother.” She growls even more. What the fuck? Since when?
“Now you are definitely not making sense.”
She glared right at me. “Just like your brother and sister, I killed your parents and took you in. You had one job to do and you couldn’t do it. You were supposed to get her to fall in love with you. You were supposed to keep her from her fated mate. You stupid wolves, breeding like fucking rabbits. It makes me sick. For years I have prevented so many from finding their mates, but then someone comes through and fucks it up. This time it was you.”
“What are you?”
She smirks. “Vampire. Witch. Take your pick. My spell was supposed to make her love you and not even sense her mate. But somehow it’s fucked up. I put a spell on you, to make you attracted to the girl I wanted you to be. Your real mate is Kelly. That’s why she won’t stop following you. She still feels it. Not totally, I dampened it, but that doesn’t mean she can’t tap into it.”
“You kept me from my true mate.” I growl.
“Of course. I had to play this out correctly. I put thoughts into your mind. Made her play her part. Showed you my disdain for the girl. She was not worth it. It didn’t take all that much to break the two of you up either. Too bad that neither of you will be happy.” She gives me a fake pouty face.
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
I have stood and am backing toward my window. I just came in, so I know that it is unlocked and open. I was too upset to do anything about it. Now, I find out that it is all fake. I don’t even really feel these feelings. My mother, or who I thought was my mother, has been fucking with my head and my emotions.
“You will die. I can’t have you telling that wolf what is going on. She can wreck everything.” She cocks her head to the side and grins. “Too, bad really. I actually kind of liked you. You were a good son.”
I feel the windowsill behind my hand. “I could still be a good son. I won’t say anything. Just give me Cass and all will be according to plan. Kill Justin instead.” I am trying to buy time. I wouldn’t do that to Cass.
She sighs, “Unfortunately I already know what is in your heart. You will tell her.”
I turn and leap. I know what is coming next. I can’t wait another second. As my paws land on the ground I hear a screech behind me. I know she is going to come after me. I tear off in the direction of Cass’s house. If anything the bitch seemed worried about her. Maybe there is something I don’t know.
Coming through the woods, branches and vines, try to snare me. I keep pushing through, tearing at any that come close. I have to get to Cass. A vine catches around my throat. I don’t know what to do. Only my brain starts to process it better than my actual thoughts. I shift back to human and extend my claws to cut through it. Quickly I shift back to my wolf. I have to get to Cass, no matter what it takes.
