Chapter 29- Dru
The wolves were getting anxious. I don’t know how long my brother and I will be able to continue our false pretense of being on their territory.
“Tell me dragon shifter, why is King Nikolai so interested in the mate bond.” Purred the Alpha Wolf.
“I am not sure.” Draq responded with his voice and face void of emotion.
“Tell me seer,” the alpha wolf sneered, standing from his chair, causing it to go flying backwards and he placed his hands roughly on the desk, leaving an impression, “does this have anything to do with the blood slave he has hiding in his chambers.”
My gaze flickered to my brother’s for the briefest of moments, how did Alpha Ash know about Mary. And how did he know Nikolai kept Mary in his chambers, was there a mole in the palace. Only Nikolai’s most trusted advisors were allowed on the king’s floor, surely one of them wouldn’t have traded the King’s secrets. Had the Beta wolf beem able to relay this information to the Alpha before Nikolai unleased his wrath, killing him.
I was unable to hide my emotions quick enough at the shocking mention of Mary, the Alpha wolf smiled slyly. “So the stories I have heard are true,” Alpha Ash said with a glean in his eyes, one that spoke of something evil being plotted. “The Vampire King, the strongest supernatural in the realm, has a human mate,” the wolf chuckled darkly.
Draq spoke up quickly trying to dissuade Apha Ash in his way of thinking. “Never.” He hissed, his power of persuasion filling the room. “King Nikolai would never stoop so low as to mate with a human. A human mate would bring great dishonor to the King, and would provide him with a great weakness. No, the human blood slave, is only someone that the King is enjoying feeding on and seeking pleasure from. See, as I’m sure you’ve heard the human is very stubborn and provides a challenge to our King. Once he
is finished toying with her, like a cat toys with a mouse, he will drain her, leaving nothing more than a dry empty corpse.” Drag finished.
Alpha Ash however was a strong wolf, strong enough to detect Draq’s power of persuasion and fight it off.
“You dare attack me, in my territory!” Alpha Ash yelled rattling the windows in the room. His Alpha aura swirling in the room, if we hadn’t been dragon shifters, automatically stronger than Wolves by our birthright, we would have fallen on our knees, begging for forgiveness. Even so with our strong heritage, I could feel my knees shaking under the weight of Alpha Ash’s aura.
I looked to Draq and I could tell he was feeling the same pressure to yield. How could a wolf, even that of an Alpha, harness that much power. I could feel my dragon, Baigeng, trying to take over, getting angry at the Alpha for trying to make us kneel. “Not no Baigeng. If we shift now, we will only be asking for trouble, while we are stronger than the wolves one on one, maybe even ten on one, their numbers are even higher than that. If we shift, they’ll consider it an attack of war, and gather to slaughter Draq and myself.” Baigeng considered my reasoning for a moment before finally agreeing that I was indeed right, he back down, allowing me control over my body once more, lending me his
strength as I battled to defeat Alpha Ash’s alpha aura.
I looked to my brother, and I could tell he was battling with his dragon Tianlong for control, Tianlong was a powerful dragon, before he became my brothers dragon spirit he was known as the celestial dragon, the guard of the Heaven, protector of the Gods, while my dragon was formally the guardian of the innocent making me the perfect guard, as Draq and Tianlong continued to battle for control, I turned my attention to Alpha Ash. “How dare you try to make the King’s royal guard submit to you.” I growled my voice vibrating the windows.
“This is an act of treason. Backdown now, before I hold you in contempt and hold a trial to strip you of your Alpha title.”
The alpha laughed manically, “you think you can threaten me child.” He sneered. “Even if you’re a dragon shifter, I am more powerful than you, and your so called king Nikolai. All the deaths your king is investigating, they were of my doing, the witches, Befana, Baba Yaba, and Circe, bound their souls to me, granting me access to their power,” He bellowed, causing the windows to shatter, as the wind started to pick up swirling in the room, to kill another supernatural of any type was treason, it called for the true death.
The Alpha wolf had teamed up with the three strongest witches to make him the most powerful supernatural, or at least a close match to our king, I wonder what the Alpha wolf had promised the witches in return. I starred in shock as I watched the Alpha’s aura grow stronger throughout the room, Draq’s eyes turned golden the color of Tianlong, and I knew his dragon was lending him the strength of the gods to overcome Alpha Ash’s aura, but even the great strength of the gods could not stop his wrath.
I felt as the winds cut in my skin, first slicing into my cheeks, and then my arms, finally slicing the tendons in the back of my knee, causing me to kneel to the Alpha Wolf. Baigeng lended me the strength to heal and the strength to call for my father, Lucious, who had the spirit of the dragon king, Long Wang, the father of our dragon spirits,
“please father hear my call,” I linked him, “either send us your strength to help us battle the alpha wolf, or help us to disappear from this location.” I pleaded with him. I waited for his response hoping he’s hear my call for help, as I watched Alpha Ash bend Draq to his will, causing him to knee as the wind repeated sliced into him.
“You’re no son of mine,” came the roar of my father, “you disappeared from our kingdom, without a word, only to be heard from years later, as the Vampire Kings royal guard. You disgust me, you’re princes of the dragon dynasty, yet you kneel and protect the King of Supernaturals.” He hissed. “You and your brother are dead to me, you’ve been dead for a long time, I will not shed a tear when you succumb to the Alpha wolf.”
I felt my heart harden at my father’s words. There was no hope for Draq and I. I had used the last of my strength to call upon my father, the torturer of my past, When we left the dragon dynasty, Draq and I had snuck out in the midsts of the knight, when everyone was sleeping, it was after a particularly torturous beating my father had bestowed upon us, for failing to breath hellfire at the young age of eighteen, still hatchlings in dragon terms. Nikolai had rescued us when stumbled upon an army of human hunters and from that day forth we’d pledge fealty to him,
Alpha Ash continued to strike us with the sharp cut of his new water power, a power he’d gained from the soul of a water fae, I could feel myself starting to lose consciousness at the pain, the sharp cuts of the water caused me, the last thing I heard before I succumbed completely to the darkness was Alpha Ash commanding his delta, Forest, to gather some wolves and take my brother and I down to the dungeons for further torturing. I had no way to warn Nikolai that our cover had been blown, I had no way to warn him of the powers the Alpha wolf now had. I felt an unbearable pain in my chest at my failure to protect my king. I should have used the last of my power to warn him, instead of trying to contact my worthless father.
When I awoke I had a throbbing headache, I took in my surroundings, and noticed that I was in a dingy cell, with bars enchanted with gold, making them impossible for a dragon to touch, unless he wanted to be bridled with unbearable pain, I looked around for my brother, my eyes adjusting to the darkness, I could smell his scent and knew he was somewhere in the dungeons with me. I tried calling his name, but no response came. I wasn’t too worried, I would’ve felt if he’d died, our twin bond severed. I could feel his life force in me, and knew that wherever he was in this god forsaken dungeon he was at least alive. I tried calling on Baigeng, but he was still to weak to respond. I tried to summon my seer power to see what the future held, but once again I was met with emptiness. With my strength and my powers depleted I had nothing to do but think on what course of action Alpha Ash would take first. I placed cell, looking for a way out without having to touch the gold coated bars, as I focused on the Alpha’s plans. I knew he was too smart to target the palace directly himself, but I began to wonder if maybe he’d cause a decoy to get Nikolai away from the castle before he tried to overtake them. Nikolai had already informed
us of the Beta Wolf attacking the castle but that was only to get information. A direct attack to Nikolai’s person would need be somewhere desolate where Nikolai wouldn’t be surrounded by supporters. My thoughts instantly veered towards the gathering of the Alphas. The wolves were hosting this years gathering and Nikolai always tried to be the first to arrive, to thank the host for the hospitality, this would be the perfect time for the wolves to attack him, I needed to find a way out of here, so I could warn Nikolai.
