MISTAKE 33
Chapter 33: Plotting Against Anya
Courtney Jones woke up to a resounding headache. She had not gone home for a long time and was only back for a week. She had been out all night and could barely recall how she had returned. She looked up at the clock by the side of the bead to find that it was almost afternoon.
There was a knock on her door that tore through her already pounding skull, making her wince in pain.
“Who is it?” she asked. It was a maid.
“Your father has asked you to his study, Miss,” the maid said. Courtney frozen at her words. Why were they looking for her? What did her father want?
She was full of questions. This was a man who was in love with money and had basically ordered her since she did not become like Kelsey and marry someone influential.
Since she decided not to agree to him setting up a blind date, she could count on one hand how many times she had seen her father.
“I
be there in a few minutes,” she answered the maid.
She got up from bed and washed quickly. It took her almost an hour to be done as she had a splitting headache.
By the time she got to her father’s office, he was stoically drinking tea while her mother stood by the side to serve him.
She barely acknowledged her mother when she zoned in on her father behind his large mahogany desk, who threw her a glare.

“Can’t you greet?” The mother, Gina, scolded, but she rolled her eyes.
“Do you
need something?” she asked and her father, Martin Jones.
“Watch your tone! How did you become this way?” Gina asked.
“Do you not know how to greet?” he asked.
“You have still not spoken,” she responded, and his frown deepened. Seeing their interaction, Gina could not help but frown. The way things were going, her second daughter would be hated by her husband.
“Take this,” he slid a file to Courtney, and she walked over and picked it up. When she opened it, she was filled with information on Timothy Grey. She knew the Gregs. They were a wealthy family with an infamous son. Famous for having mental issues.
He was known as a man who needed help to even dress well. There were other rumors about his uselessness that made it’s rounds around society.
Courtney raised a eyebrow at this document. “What am I to do with this?” she asked.
“You are to marry him in a week,” her father said, and she smiled lightly.
Gina’s heart jumped. She has heard of this boy. How could she let her daughter marry him?
“What nonsense are you saying? How can Courtney marry someone like that?” Gina basically screamed.
“Do you really think you are in the medieval times because you are my father? You don’t get to

decide who I marry. What do you think you could possibly offer for me to agree to the marriage?” She asked, and Jeremy frowned.
She was quite rebellious, not like her little sister, Kelsey, who had found a rich husband who was useful to him. He just had to be careful not to spoil the marriage. Because of this, he could not ask for help from his soon–to–be son–in–law when his business met with issues.
The Grey family is looking for a while for their only son, who will give birth to a grandchild for them. He immediately thought of Courtney. Even though he thought it was a waste to marry her off to a mentally ill man, they were offering a lot of money.
As though Courtney could reason his mind, she scoffed.
“You think I am like my sister; who will find you an in–law for your business? Are you dreaming? Is money all you know? You even want to sell me off to some mental patient? How much money are they offering for your conscience?” Courtney asked, strolling over to the chairs before his desk and sitting down.
Gina could see her daughter’s temper was rising and tried to calm her down.
“Courtney, calm down. I will talk to your father, okay?” She said, but Courtney did not bother to look at her, talk more, or answer her.
“What could you possibly say to convince me to marry him?” she asked.
“You don’t care if I remove you from my will?” he asked, and she chuckled.
“Only an idiot would believe your nonsense. You only intend to give your properties to your sons. What does a daughter mean to you? Do you want me to state it?” she asked, and he slammed the desk.
“Insolent!” Jeremy bellowed, scaring Gina. His reaction made Gina frown. What about his will

did she not know?” she wondered. She did not have a son, but her husband had never cared, so she felt fine. If her husband really cares about sons, what is going through his head?
“So, you will not marry?” he asked.
she said with an
“Why would I? It is a free world. You can’t force me to say I do, can you! amused smile. She had to admit, she quite enjoyed the look of panic on his face.
“What do you want?” he asked.
“You can hand over your company shares first, and I will consider it,” she answered, and he slammed his hand down again.
“You dare!” he shouted.
“Why wouldn’t I dare? You may have gotten used to selling daughters, but do I have to join you and sell myself?” she asked.
Courtney was tired. She could no longer take him slamming his desk every now and then. Her headache was getting worse because of him.
“You know what I want. All you need to do is hand it over to get me on that altar. I am guessing you have made a good deal out of this marriage, like you did my ister’s, right? It would be a shame to lose it because you hold on to something that is going to become mine in the future…unless it won’t be ours,” she said and started leaving, before pausing at the door and looking back in.
“But, I wonder… You only have two legitimate daughters,” Courtney said as Gina frowned. ” What are you going to use as a deal when all your daughters are married off?” Courtney said and strolled out, leaving Gina in deep thought. Her daughter’s words started making her suspect her husband.

When Courtney stepped out of the office, she spotted the head butler carrying in snacks and stopped her. She leaned in and whispered to her “If my father receives a visit from the gray family, lead him to my sitting room first,” she instructed, and he raised a brow lightly with a small smile and nodded.
After that, she proceeded to enter her room towards her reading nook.
Just then, the familiar ring of Courtney’s phone disrupted the silence. She glanced at the caller ID and frowned as she saw her elder sister’s name, Kelsey, flashing on the screen.
“Courtney, listen carefully,” Kelsey’s urgent voice spilled through the phone, making Courtne
frown. Dad is planning to marry you off to that mentally ill Greg family son.”
Courtney paused and scoffed, “I already found out.”
“Court, this is serious. Of all people, a mentally ill person?” Kelsey fumed.
**You need to put your foot down and refuse this marriage.” Kelsey insisted.
Courtney could tell Kelsey was angry on her behalf.
A dangerous look flashed through Courtney’s eyes as a wicked thought cu sed her mind.
“Who says I need to be the one to marry that thental patient? There is another Jones daughter, right?” Courtney asked with a wide smile, “Didn’t you say you had met her?”
“Anya… true, there is still Anya. I will talk to Grandma. Since she is a member of this family, she should contribute,” Kelsey said.
