The Billionaire's Mistake (Anya and Daniel)

MISTAKE 145

Chapter 145: Judgement

The name hung in the air between them. Mary reached out, squeezing her brother’s hand. ” Dan, you need to let her go. Anya made her choice.”

Vincent took a deep, shuddering breath. When he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. “I know. I have let her go, I mean. It’s just… where do we go from here?”

Mary’s voice was steel. “We do our job. We bring down the Twelve and anyone else involved in this mess. Together.”

For the first time that day, a genuine smile crossed Vincent’s face. “Together. I like the sound

of that.”

Across the city, in a lavish penthouse, Shaina paced nervously, her eyes darting to the door every few seconds. In the corner, her daughter Hazel sat curled in an armchair, her phone clutched tightly in her hand.

“Anything?” Shaina asked, though she already knew the answer.

Hazel shook her head; frustration filled her voice. “Still nothing. It’s like Anya’s dropped off the face of the earth. She won’t answer our calls.” Anyone listening could tell she was desperate.

A heavy pounding on the door made them both jump. A muffled voice called out, “Shaina! Open this door immediately!”

Shaina’s face paled. “It’s your uncle. Quick, into the bedroom!”

They rushed into the adjoining room, Shaina locking the door behind them. The pounding

intensified.

“You can’t hide in there forever!” the voice growled. “The family has decided. Hazel will marry Antonio’s son, and that’s final!”

Hazel’s eyes widened in panic. “Mom, we can’t let them do this. We have to get out of here!”

Shaina pulled her daughter close, her mind racing. “I know, baby. I know. Just… give me a

minute to think.”

As if on cue, Hazel’s phone buzzed. She looked down, hope blooming on her face. “It’s a friend of mine! She sent an address. Says to meet her there.”

Shaina peered at the message, her brow furrowing. “That’s clear across town. How are we supposed to- and how can we just leave?”

Her words were cut off by the sound of splintering wood. The outer door had given way.

“I have already liquidated our money. If we insist on staying, this family will really sell you Don’t worry, we will be fine. Let’s leave through the fire escape,” Shaina hissed, already moving towards the window. “Now!”

As they clambered out onto the metal grating, Shaina sent up a silent prayer. Whatever the friend had planned, she hoped it was worth the risk they were about to take.

Back at the agency, a lot of activity took over the command center. Mary stood at the helm, coordinating the simultaneous raids on the remaining twelve locations.

“Team Bravo, you’re clear to breach,” she ordered, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “Charlie, what’s your status?”

“In position,” came the reply. “Awaiting your go.”

Mary took a deep breath; the country was at its lowest. They had been shamed internationally. They needed to clean up to a safe face fast. She had made all preparations, and the parliament was watching their progress.

She caught Vincent’s eye across the room. He gave her a small nod, a silent gesture of support and trust.

“All teams,” Mary’s voice rang out, clear and determined. “Execute.”

As reports began flooding in, gunfire exchanged, suspects were apprehended, and evidence was secured.

It was going to be a long night for Mary. They had a long road ahead.

With the way things are going, they would need to clear out all the agencies in government.

And the former president was still in the wind. Could he be the one coordinating with the 12 guns to fight back?

When she thought of the missing former president, her mind went to a group of people others had completely dismissed as innocent: the Shaw family.

In the darkness, Edward opened his eyes and could see nothing. They tried to move, but his body was too weak. But he could tell he was in a box.

Before he could panic, the lid of the box opened, letting light burn his eyes. His vision soon cleared, and he saw Daniel Shaw over him.

It did not take long for him to realize he was in a coffin.

“Daniel,” Edward said.

“You have given me a lot of grief,” Edward said.

“There is no need to act like this; you too have given other people grief,” Edward said.

“Yes, but. I made sure to win. You killed my wife. Made my daughter motherless,” Daniel said.

To his words, Edward chuckled. “I hear you are more in love with your new wife than the old. If you think of it that way, I helped you,” he said.

“Well, I don’t see it that way. You tried to kill my second wife too. It is as though we have an odd fate, Edward. When it comes to both of us, only one of us can live. That is just how ill fate works,” Daniel said. Edward could tell Daniel would not let him go.

“You will be the first suspect if I die,” Edward said. He was not one to fear death. But lying in a coffin did something to a person.

“The moment I turned over evidence of your crime to the attorney general, in retaliation, I removed myself from the list of suspects. Some would even say I am the one person who wants you in custody facing the law the most in the world,” Daniel said.

“Well played,” Edward said with a chuckle. “So, this is how I go? How will you do it? Poison? Torture or a bullet to the head?”

“This is it. You are fine, healthy, and will have as much air as you need in that coffin. So, have a good rest.” Daniel was sad and nodded to his men, and Edward saw the coffin lid getting closed.

“No. No. no… Daniel, don’t be a coward; kill me!” Edward screamed. Daniel was letting him die

slowly. With all the air he needs, he would be alive in the coffin for more than a month in the dark and will eventually die of starvation.

“Kill me! Kill me!” He screamed, but the coffin lid was sealed shut, and his coffin was lowered into a well–ventilated tomb. Daniel had made the tomb and coffin just for him. He would die as slowly as possible.

Daniel got home to his secondary home, where Anya was waiting for him. When he got home, he fell into her arms and wrapped a stormarm around her.

“Is it over?” she asked.

“Yes,” he said.

Daniel was not sure how he slept that day. He slept for hours before waking.

When he opened his eyes, Anya was nowhere to be found. He got up and dressed before heading down. When he headed down, he met Anya, seated opposite Mercy.

The tension was thick.

Daniel glanced at Justin at the corner and raised a brow. Justin walked over to him and stood beside him.

“She was with you all this while?” Daniel asked, glancing at Justin.

“You are pretty calm about it,” Justin said.

“How did you think I would react?” Daniel asked.

“After what she plotted at the cruise, I thought you would be angry to bring her near Anya,” Justin answered.

“You thought so and still brought her over?” Daniel asked with his brow raised, but Justin did not answer. Daniel looked at him to find that he was staring at Mercy.

Justin looked away to meet Daniel’s eyes full of knowing questions. It was as though his eyes were asking Justin if he liked Mercy. Justin only looked away without answering.

A bit away, Mercy and Anya were staring at each other. Anya was tired of the silence and wanted to leave when Mercy did not speak.

But when she made to get up, Mercy finally spoke.
