PHB 9
Lucas had just finished buttoning his work shirt. As he reached for his glasses, his phone started ringing. Glancing briefly, he saw the name ‘Chief Morales’ which was none other than his father’s contact, displayed clearly on the screen.
For a moment, Lucas just kept staring at it. Standing still, he listened to the phone ringing until it finally stopped.
Oddly, when the sound from his phone ceased, Lucas breathed a sigh of relief. He acted as though his father’s call was like a death sentence he had to worry about.
Feeling safe, Lucas continued to get ready before heading to work. He was about to put on his watch when he jumped in surprise. His phone was ringing again, non-stop this time, almost as if it demanded to be answered immediately.
Lucas was well aware of his father’s nature. The man behaved just like a moody teenager who insisted on terrorizing his girlfriend when their call was intentionally left unanswered. Besides, Lucas knew exactly what his father was going to discuss once he accepted the call.
“Hello, Dad?”
Lucas tried to greet his father as calmly and politely as possible. In the end, he gave in and accepted the call. Rather than being ignored and terrorized all day, he preferred to face and resolve it.
“Why did you take so long? Are you trying to avoid me?”
Lucas took a deep breath. If he didn’t answer quickly, his father would undoubtedly launch into a long lecture.
“I just finished showering and getting ready, so I didn’t hear the phone. By the way, why are you calling me so early in the morning?”
“Are you postponing your wedding with Devina again?”
See, Lucas knew it. One of the reasons his father called was definitely about this. No matter how much he tried to hide it, it would eventually be found out.
“Yes, Dad.”
“Why? Are you trying to cancel the plans between me and Devina’s parents? Remember, Luc, you two have been engaged for too long. I’m embarrassed if you don’t look serious like this.”
Lucas took a deep breath before responding. “It’s not like that, Dad. I’ve discussed this with Devina. I just need a little more time to finish the tasks you gave me, and Devina agreed.”
It was okay for Lucas to mention Devina’s name this time. After all, they had agreed on it beforehand.
“Oh, really?”
“Yes,” Lucas replied quickly. This was his chance to explain and gain approval from his father for the wedding postponement. “Lucas and Devina have agreed to postpone it for three or four months ahead.”
“Why so long?”
Andreas Morales immediately cut in. He was still doubtful, afraid that what his son had just said was just an excuse.
“Don’t forget, Dad, you gave me quite a heavy workload right now. Because I need to focus on it, I asked for more time from Devina. After I finish the tasks you assigned, I promise to focus on preparing for the wedding as planned from the beginning.”
There was a sigh on the other side of the line. Lucas was sure that his father couldn’t argue or protest now. After all, Devina, his prospective bride herself, agreed to the arrangement with Lucas.
“Alright then. So, how is the task I gave you? Is there any progress? Or is it still stuck?”
Lucas unconsciously closed his eyes dramatically. Just as he had managed to get out of the marriage issue, now he was faced with the old task that hadn’t been completed until now. So frustrating!
“Daniel and Daniel are the ones that Lucas has yet to investigate. But Lucas promises that everything will be completed without a trace in one or at most two months. After that, there won’t be anything for you to worry about.”
“Alright … I’ll hold you to your promise to finish it soon. These rats like them must be eradicated immediately. Otherwise, they’ll spread disease and cause our company to suffer losses or even collapse.”
“Certainly, Dad. Lucas promises. I’ve already started investigating Daniel’s personal data. Soon, everything will be revealed without a trace.”
A sense of relief emerged in Lucas’s mind. He was grateful that he could resolve two issues. And most importantly, he succeeded in postponing the wedding ceremony with the excuse of completing tasks.
“But…” Andreas Morales seemed to pause his speech, sparking curiosity and wonder in Lucas.
“But what, Dad?”
“Tonight, you still have to come to the inauguration event of our subsidiary company. It’s time for people to know that you will be the successor who will replace me soon. I want you to pick up Devina and bring her to the event together. There’s no refusal, Luc. You need to know that Devina’s parents and many of our business associates will be present at the event.”
Unconsciously, the smile that had begun to appear on Lucas’s lips turned into a grimace, fortunately not visibly audible.
To be honest, he felt reluctant to appear in public with Devina by his side. It would only fuel speculation that he and Devina were indeed getting married soon.
However, Lucas knew that his father’s words were like commands. Before he could even object, his father had already warned him not to think of refusing this order.
“Yes,” Lucas reluctantly agreed. “I’ll pick up and bring Devina to the event, Dad. Once again, you don’t need to worry.”
“Good. See you tonight at the venue. Please be on time, Luc. Remember, you are the future successor to me.”
