Piles of deceit
‘ What are you doing here?’ She asked in shock after some seconds of staring. Her expression was that of shock and confusion. One could tell she was mentally dealing with the possiblity of everything being a dream.
‘I want some answers from you!’ Cathy ordered in a stern voice.
She was taken aback by her audacity but maintained her shocked expression.
‘Leave my house or I will call up the security agents!” She yelled as she tried to shut the door but Cathy was already a step before her .
‘Stop Nelly Chester and let me in !’ She screamed with her bossy aura .
The young lady was shocked, she stood for a while before she entered inside , letting the door open for her to enter .
Cathy entered and immediately observed the interior wall of the house. It was empty… well except for a painting which was at the end of the room.
Cathy tried to hide her disgust because she was a fan of multiple colours and seeing the wall was already freaking her out.
‘You don’t like my home right?’ Nelly asked. Cathy was shocked, how could she tell what she was thinking? She was keeping a straight face.
‘No, it’s fine ‘ Cathy managed to say.
‘My mum tried to change this attitude of mine but you know am pretty stubborn… just like you ‘ she shrugged as she fetched cigarettes and Lighter from her bag.
She offered a stick to Cathy who plainly refused.
‘When you say your mum, you mean my aunt right?’ Cathy asked.
‘Yes, but it’s not what you think at all’.
‘What do you mean?’
She shrugged before answering,
‘Your Cathy or Cindy?’.
Cathy was taken aback, what was she talking about?
‘Am Cathy’.
Married?
Yes!
‘To whom? Axl?
Yes, how did you know all these?’.
‘Lets start from the fact that Axl was supposed to get married to me… it’s solves the issue right?’ she asked with a pissed look.
‘At this point am so confused… break it down’ she answered with a heavy sigh.
‘ Ohhh Cathy, his dad and your dad were best friends ‘.
So?
‘ So they made a deal for us to be married. Wait I get it now…’ she paused. ‘ Your dad took me like a daughter ‘ she said beaming with smiles.
‘ Ohh, so why didn’t you get married?’.
‘ You still don’t know?’ .
Nelly smoked some more as the room remained silent.
She opened her mouth to speak when Cathy did same and they both ended up talking at the same time.
They smiled as Cathy gestured her to continue.
‘ Uncle planned our marriage based on their friendship ‘ she said getting up .
She walked to a refrigerator which stood at the kitchen, to Cathy’s greatest surprise it was filled with different expensive wines. She thought it looked strange , how did she get enough money to purchase such, then she remembered what had brought her here.
‘Nelly? How are you related to me… you answer Chester ‘ she said with a confused expression.
Nelly tried to suppress her laughter but it resulted in a giggle. She stared hard still amazed that Cathy didn’t get any of the clues she had given her.
‘Your dad is my uncle, my dad and your dad are blood brothers ‘ she answered. ‘ I guess I have your favourite champagne here’ . Handing her a glass, she poured some red champagne into her glass.
‘ How do you know so much about me?’
‘Simple your the owner of the Chester’s Enterprise’.
She stared at her unbelievably as she wondered how she knew that much.
‘ What about your parents? You don’t leave alone? ‘.
‘ my mum is hospitalized and my dad is dead’ she answered without an atom of sadness.
‘ Am sorry about that, when did it happen ?’ Cathy asked concerned ignoring her hard stare.
‘You don’t know? Cathy you way back in information that concerns our family ‘ she retorted. ‘Well.. Dad died with your parents in the car crash ‘.
What! And then the glass fell of her hands as it shattered.
Nelly looked at her then the broken glass not making an effort to clean it up.
The next moment, a young girl which was dressed as a maid came in to clean up the broken glass.
‘ I still…. don’t believe this ‘ she stammered as soon as the maid left the room.
She smiled like she had expected that reaction.
‘ I recently discovered that, you know my dad had the highest shares in the newspaper company ‘ she whispered with a smile.
The young maid brought another glass to replace the broken one while they were still talking. Cathy collected the glass half filled with wine without bothering to say a thank you.
‘ Tell me more about the death of your father’ Cathy begged.
‘I won’t tell you, inside I will show it to you but now is not the right time ‘ she explained.
Cathy turned around as she observed the only painting in the room, she was curious to know who it was as she moved closer.
‘Nice painting ‘ she admired with her fingers touching the tracing lines.
‘Yeah… mum had that for a long time . I guess the painting is quite older than us’ she giggled.
‘ The painting looks very familiar but I can’t place it’.
Nelly scowled in disgust as she looked at her, what was she talking about?
‘Cathy… the two women are our mums’ she said eyeing her nonchalantly.
Cathy looked at her pretty embarrassed and shocked at the same time.
‘ Are you sure Nelly? This picture doesn’t look anything like her’ Cathy muttered.
‘Sometimes pictures lie Cathy that’s why our memories are with us’ she said.
‘ I know that… another thing is that I have no memories of her. She died when I was barely 8’ she answered sadly.
Nelly turned to observe if she was lieing but she was saying the truth.
‘ Who told you that? Your mum died when you were 15’.
(Few hours before then)
‘Ohhh, she is Nelly… Nelly Chester…’. he answered.
What!
She looked around as she hoped no one had heard her and she heaved a sigh of relief when she found out nobody paid attention to her but she turned sharply to where the lady was but she was no where to be found.
She was taken aback and was surprised .
‘ Where did she go?’ she asked the young man .
‘ohh, maybe she went home. She has some special privileges’ he answered not removing his eyes from the screen.
She wanted to ask what privileges he was talking about but that would be a question for another day.
‘Do you know where she lives?’ she asked in a whisper.
He stopped working and looked at her like she was asking something that was impossible to give.
‘I don’t she’s not tye outgoing type and she has no friends ‘ he replied.
The curiosity on Cathy’s face was soon replaced with a sad face as she looked so unhappy.
He watched her for a while then muttered slowly.
‘You can ask the manager, he can give you her address. Just some tip and he will spill out her information ‘
She smiled at the information as she thanked him with some cash before leaving for the Manager’s office .
The Manager’s office was on the last floor, it wasn’t as exquisite as the ones she had in the Chester’s Enterprise but she could swear that the office wasn’t like this in the past years.
Without knocking she entered and immediately her eyes met with the Manager who was working on his system.
She strolled to where he was and sat down immediately.
The manager looked up immediately to see the intruder and probably teach him or her a lesson for not having manners but that fierce looking face turned into a smile when he recognized her .
‘ Ah! It’s a great honour to have you here, Cathy Chester. To what do I owe this visit?’ He said beaming with smiles as he got up to give her a handshake.
‘. I came here to get an information on the growth of my company when I met an old friend but she Left immediately I got time to talk to her’ she lied.
‘Sorry about that Ma’am, what can I help you with in this situation?’ he asked with faked desperation.
‘ She is a staff here and as a matter of fact, your the only one who can help me’ she said with a stern stare.
‘ Staff informations are confidential and not to be disclosed ‘ he responded.
‘ I know that but also know it’s important for me to find her ‘ she said as she thought It it would be a good idea to bribe him with some cash but she immediately shrugged that thought.
That would be very risky, she thought.
He thought for a while and then decided to help her.
‘What’s her name?’ .
‘ Nelly Chester ‘ she answered.
‘ I understand why you want her’ he said with a smile leaving Cathy astonished.
He searched for a while on his system before writing something on a piece of paper.
‘Here, this is her address ‘ he said giving her the paper.
She collected it gladly and muttered a thank you. She brought some wands of money from her bag and gave him which he collected greedily.
He got up to walk her but she plainly refused.
