Chapter 36

Ciara.

I was bored out of my mind doing embroidery while my mind was busy roaming about and thinking about just one person- Alden.

He had left this morning, promising to come right back as soon as he was done with meeting his father, but for some odd reason, it was getting closer to midnight and he had still not shown up.

I had taken the pains of going around the palace in search of him, but everywhere I looked, I couldn't find him. Not even the servants had an idea of where he could be. It was as though he had just vanished into thin air with no trace. "Shit!" I swore, after pricking myself with the needle. Of course, it was the darn needle's fault and even though I had been absent-minded the whole time, I took no part in the blame.

"I never knew you could curse," I heard what was undeniably Alden's voice ring in my head.

"Alden?" I called, looking around, then tapping my head believing I had simply been imagining and hearing things that weren't there.

"Are you tapping your head right now? That's insane," the voice came again, with a hint of laughter.

"Alden, are you playing games with me right now?" I asked, opening the curtains and peering out the windows, but I saw no trace of him. I then ran to the door with high expectations, but he wasn't outside either.

"Hey, remember what happened last night?" the voice came again.

I blushed, fiercely, but on second thoughts, I quickly regained my composure. "What? Are you going to tell me now that I'm so bad at it and that's why you haven't come to see me all day?" I asked, looking up at the ceiling unsure of where his voice was coming from.

I could hear him stifle a chuckle, but somehow, I could feel the excitement coursing through his veins. I knew he was laughing but I couldn't hear it. Still, I was sure that he was indeed laughing. "Come outside," he said.

"Okay..." my voice trailed as I quietly opened my door and made sure that no one was around, I began walking down the hallway and the voice was quiet until I tried making a turn to where Alden's room was.

"Don't go to my room. Listen to my heartbeat and come to where I am," he stated.

I chuckled. "What? Do you think I have some kind of superpowers? How exactly am I supposed to somehow just listen to your heartbeat and know where you are?"

I asked, throwing my hands up in the air in frustration.

The voice went completely silent, and this time around, nothing prompted it to speak further. I was getting convinced that the voice had all along just been in my head and that I had probably been missing Alden to the point where I had begun to hallucinate.

I decided to turn around and go back to my room, when all of a sudden, I heard the sound of the rhythmical thudding of his heart. How I knew it was his heartbeat was a mystery, but I was certain and I followed the sound like he had earlier instructed.

With each step I took, my wolf got a little more excited and my heart longed for him even more; even though we were getting closer and closer to him.

Outside, the sky was cloudy and the ground was wet and slippery from the rain that had fallen earlier in the afternoon. It was a cold dark night which soon lit up with scented candles which were surprisingly aligned vertically on the wet ground which lighted up the way.

I smiled in appreciation for whoever had been so thoughtful in considering lighting up my path. I followed the candles and soon reached a beautiful garden, filled with luscious, beautiful and sweet-smelling flowers of different kinds and different colours.

The atmosphere was great and airy, with fireflies and butterflies making the experience even more enjoyable and magical.

"Ciara," I heard Alden's angelic voice call over my shoulders.

"Alden, it is you," I said, running to hug him tightly.

We stood like that for a while before I finally released him from the hug and stared at him, smiling brightly to show him how truly thrilled I was to see him.

"Yes, it is I. I guess you did listen to the sound of my heart beating again," he said.

"But how is that possible? Technology or sorcery?" I was truly interested in knowing.

"Don't tell me you have never heard of a mate link before. Listen, we mated yesterday, so we've developed a strong bond; strong enough to feel each other's emotions and communicate with each other even if we are miles apart. Of course, you can build a wall around your mind so I can't read you, but I just wanted you to know that it is very possible," he explained.

"I'm indeed surprised. What a special bond we share, wow," I said, amazed.

He smiled at me and going down on one knee, he brought out a jewellery box from his pocket. When he opened it, it revealed a beautiful silver necklace, laced with authentic diamonds, with the highlight of the necklace being its ruby pendant.

"Wow!" I exclaimed, having never seen something so beautiful in all my eighteen years of being alive.

"I know it's beautiful," he said, shooting me a smile.

"Did you just read my mind? Anyway, this is so beautiful. I love it so much," I said, giggling excitedly like a little child.

"I was out all day trying to get the jeweller to make the perfect necklace for the perfect girl. Ciara, will you be my girl?"

The words hit me like a lightning bolt. I hadn't been expecting such a proposal from him. As a matter of fact, I had thought he would definitely stop trying since we already mated, but no, he was still being the best guy I had ever come across. At that moment, I knew. I knew exactly what I wanted from this... from him... from us.

"No, Alden, I don't want to just be your girl. I want to be more than that. I hereby accept you, Alden Adams, as my mate for all times," I declared.
