My Toyboy 292
Cynthia had been unaware of this at first. She hadn’t followed up on Shirley for a long time, ever since Jonathan mentioned that Shirley would definitely go to jail.
When Jonathan gravely informed her about the recent developments, Cynthia was stunned and asked, “How could this happen? Who helped her?”
For things to develop like this, Shirley couldn’t have pulled this off alone; someone must have been meddling behind the
scenes.
A sarcastic smile appeared on Cynthia’s lips. “The Jones family paid off that paparazzo?”
Jonathan’s expression remained serious. “The Jones family didn’t get involved this time, and they don’t have that kind of power either.”
The evidence against Shirley had been indisputable, and the prosecution had been led by a top legal team from BJ. Turning the tables shouldn’t have been this easy, and Cynthia seemed to realize that too.
Jonathan continued, “I’m sorry, Cynthia.”
Cynthia looked at him. “It was your sister, wasn’t it?”
Jonathan nodded. “She’s bought off quite a few people and even hired the country’s top lawyer, Ruben Smith.”
Ruben is a prominent lawyer in Betrico, undefeated in court and only working with top–tier clients. Most of his cases involved bending the truth, and he’s great at exploiting legal loopholes.
Cynthia sneered, “He’s just after power and wealth, with no sense of right and wrong. Calling him a defender of justice is an insult to the term.”
Jonathan reassured her, “Don’t worry. They may have caught us off guard this time, but we’ll file again. I won’t let Shirley get away with this.”
Cynthia nodded. “I’m not worried about Shirley going to jail; it’s your sister I’m concerned about.”
Peace had barely settled before Whitney stirred up trouble again, this time in Roncrity.
Cynthia thought, ‘What’s driving her to protect Shirley? What’s her agenda? Whitney’s tactics and schemes f
Shirley’s; it can’t be just to oppose us.‘

Jonathan sounded frustrated as he said, “At the end of the year, the Bennett Group holds its shareholder meeting. Every year around this time, she stirs up trouble for me. And this year, there’s a strong chance my father will announce his successor.”
His brow furrowed deeper. “This storm will likely be fiercer than any before.”
Cynthia wrapped her arms around Jonathan’s waist and said, “No matter what happens, I’ll face it with you. Honey, you’re not alone anymore.”
Jonathan felt his throat tighten. In all these years, only Cynthia had ever told him he wasn’t alone. For so long, he’d stood in the storm alone, battling with loneliness and numbness.
Cynthia had been his light and his hope. But now, he’d selfishly drawn her into the storm to face it together. He wasn’t sure if that was a mistake.
Jonathan held Cynthia tightly in his arms. “Sorry for dragging you into this with me.”
“I’m not afraid of facing the storm as long as we’re together,” replied Cynthia.
“Cynthia, I’ll never let you down. I love you.”
Meanwhile, Shirley stepped out of the courthouse and squinted against the glaring sunlight. After so long in detention, she had lost so much weight that her cheeks had sunken in.
She didn’t really understand what had happened. She’d been certain she would be convicted. But then, the paparazzo suddenly confessed, taking all the blame on himself. She had even been assigned a new lawyer, and she wondered if Selena had arranged it.
Shirley felt a bit dazed. At that moment, someone appeared in front of her. She recognized him as the sharp–tongued lawyer who had just defended her in court. But she didn’t know him at all.
“Ms. Jones, I’m your attorney, Ruben Smith. If you run into any trouble in the future, feel free to reach out to me.” With that, Ruben handed her a business card.
Shirley was stunned when she saw the card and realized Ruben was a partner at Betrico’s most prestigious law firm.
Surprised, she asked, “Who are you, and why did you help me? Who sent you to defend me? Was it my mother?”
Dressed in a tailored suit, Ruben exuded a natural arrogance and an air of scrutiny.
He looked at Shirley with disdain and responded, “Your mother couldn’t afford my services. I’m Ms. Whitney Bennett’s personal attorney. It’s because she decided to save you that you have your freedom now.”
Shirley was shocked. “Whitney? Jonathan’s sister?” She remembered Whitney from the reality show featuring Cynthia and jonathan; her appearance later in the show had caused quite a stir.
Whitney is the current president of the Bennett Group, and her tense relationship with Jonathan is well–known. However, Shirley had no connection to Whitney, so she couldn’t understand why Whitney would want to save her. “Mr. Smith, may I meet with Ms. Bennett? I’d like to thank her in person,” Shirley said.
Ruben gave a slight smile. “Given your status, that’s unlikely for now. Just remember that it’s Ms. Bennett who granted you this second chance.”
Shirley quickly replied, “I understand. I’m deeply grateful, and if I ever get the chance, I’ll surely repay her kindness.”
Ruben nodded in satisfaction and started to leave. After a few steps, he turned back. “By the way, Ms. Bennett said that whatever you want to do, go ahead without worrying about the consequences. We’ll cover for you.” With that, he got into a black Bentley.
Shirley stood there, stunned for a long time. The more she thought about it, the more exhilarated she felt.
She had once tried to rely on Jonathan and connect with the Xenos family, but they were so snobbish and looked down on her. Now, without even lifting a finger, she found herself under the patronage of Whitney herself.
Whitney was a powerhouse even Jonathan wouldn’t dare cross. She was competing with him for the position of the family successor. She might even become the richest person in the country, or perhaps the world, someday.
The idea of having caught Whitney’s eye left Shirley thrilled. If she could become Whitney’s trusted right hand, she could soar to unimaginable heights.
Shirley’s excitement only grew as she thought about it. By then, even Cynthia and Jonathan might have to bow to her.
Shirley hailed a cab back to the Jones residence. All the way, a simmering resentment filled her heart. She had been detained for so long, yet Justin and Selena hadn’t come to visit her once.
They hadn’t done anything to help her; it was as if they had abandoned her entirely.
When Shirley reached home, she saw the family’s car pulling in Justin was discharged from the hospital today, after nearly twenty days as an inpatient.
Finally, he was able to walk again. Although he’d had heart surgery, Logan had stressed that he could not suffer any further shocks. The next incident could mean sudden heart failure.
When Justin and Selena stepped out of the car, Shirley ran up to them and complained, “Is this how you act as parents? You gave birth to me but didn’t raise me. Now you want to abandon me? You don’t even deserve to be parents.”
