Chapter 45

Linda held Zack’s hand, saying, “I’m still alive.”

“It’s a huge relief that you’re alright. I wouldn’t know how to face your parents in the afterlife otherwise,” Zack said, tears streaming down his face.

He had worked with John for many years and had always treated Linda with care. He struggled to accept it when he heard the news of Linda’s death four years ago.

“Zack, I’m fine. I’m still here,” Linda reassured him, holding back her tears. She got straight to the point. “I came today because I need to ask you something.

“Sure, come on in,” Zack said, gesturing for Linda to enter before noticing William. He had never been fond of William, especially with all the pain William had caused Linda.

“Isn’t this Mr. William Wilson from Wilson Group?” Zack’s voice was loaded with disdain. “What brings the great Mr. Wilson to my humble home?”

Zack was fully aware of everything William had done to Linda. He considered her his own daughter. Considering her past suffering, how could Zack ever be kind to the man responsible for it?

William stayed calm, knowing he was at fault.

“Mr. Xander, about what happened before-” he began, but Zack’s wife, Julie Armfield, took Linda’s hand and led her into the house.

“You’re Linda, right? You must be exhausted from the trip from Osmo to Aventis. Come inside and get

some rest,” Julie said.

Linda nodded. She wasn’t interested in engaging with William more than she had to. Zack followed them inside and threw a hostile look back at William.

William was set on staying put despite the unwelcoming atmosphere. Even though he wasn’t wanted, he wasn’t about to leave unless he was physically removed.

He figured that by sticking around Linda, he might manage to win her over.

Linda sat in the living room, sipped her water, and asked Zack about John.

She had complete, trust in Zack. John’s former subordinates were known for their loyalty and tight–knit relationships. They were surely feeling confused and angry about John’s death.

Linda’s visit served two purposes–to gather information from Zack and to persuade him to return to the

company.

The finance department needed someone utterly loyal. Though Linda was young and had the potential to nurture a loyal confidant, the company couldn’t afford to wait for that.

During the past four years, Tom had hollowed out Felix Group, making it look strong on the surface but weak underneath. If not for the projects supplied by William, the company might have gone bankrupt by

“Linda, your dad didn’t want me to tell you some things,” Zack said, indicating he knew more. His promise to John kept him from revealing it to her.

“Zack, the fact that I traveled from Osmo to Aventis to see you shows that I already know a lot.” Linda gazed at Zack, her eyes so reminiscent of John’s that it left Zack speechless. “Zack, please, just tell me. I’m not a child anymore, so I can take it.”

Linda knew the reasons. She had been cherished and protected her entire life, especially after the abduction. Since then, John and Adeline rarely let her go out alone.

In business, making enemies was unavoidable. If someone failed to harm Linda once, they could always try a second or third time.

After thinking it over, Zack decided to reveal the truth. “Linda, I may not know everything, but I’m certain that Tom bribed the hospital staff.”

John had started his business from the ground up and had always neglected his health. Luckily, his health problems were detected early enough and weren’t expected to be fatal.
