Chapter 15: No Longer Most Eligible Barchelor
On the uppermost floor of a grand mansion located in the heart of the city, Sebastian Woods sat regally on a plush chair. With legs crossed and donning a luxurious black robe, he exuded an air of elegance and sophistication. Part of his broad chest was exposed, revealing a toned physique that made him look like a living Adonis.
The dim light from the lamp beside him added to the allure, casting mysterious shadows across his chiseled features. In one hand, he held a fat cigar, its fragrant smoke curling around him like a cloud, and in the other, a glass of whiskey glistened under the moonlight.
Despite the casual setting, his posture and aura were undeniably great, like a man entirely in control of the world.
A small, contented smile played on Sebastian’s lips as his mind wandered to thoughts of Kourtney, his new wife. He found himself thinking about her nonstop since he came back. He wished she had agreed to go home with him tonight, even though they had barely known each other.
Taking a long drag from his cigar, he let the smoke swirl around him as he reminisced about their whirlwind encounter. From their car collision to the moment they exchanged vows, everything had happened so fast. But it felt right, and he couldn’t be more pleased.
He leaned back on the chair, letting the bathrobe fall slightly off his shoulder, showcasing his defined collarbone. The night had turned chilly, but he hardly noticed, too lost in the thoughts of his wife. He couldn’t wait to see her again, to feel her presence beside him, and possibly to share the rest of his life with her.
Sebastian wasn’t used to this overwhelming desire for companionship. For years, he had been plagued by that allergy, which had made it impossible for him to date or even consider settling down. He had spent a fortune trying to find a cure, seeking out treatments from every corner of the world, but nothing had worked.
Tonight, however, everything had changed. With a contented sigh, Sebastian stubbed out the remains of his cigar before picking up his cell phone to make a call. As soon as the line connected, Sebastian spoke, not caring if the other person was listening.
“Jamie,” he called out in a voice that commanded attention, “Inform the company that I got married. Update the website and let the world know.”
Sebastian knew the significance of making such an announcement. He would no longer be known as the city’s most eligible bachelor, but he didn’t mind. What mattered most was that, for the first time in forever, he felt comfortable in the presence of a woman, and it gave him hope of having a normal life again. But there was something else on Sebastian’s mind.
“Also,” he added as an afterthought, “send some bodyguards to follow my wife discreetly. I want to know she’s safe at all times.”
As a business magnet with billions worth of assets and also lots of rivals, he knew he needed to protect his wife from any potential threats or dangers that might lurk in the shadows. He needed to ensure she was always covered by a team he could trust.
“Consider it done, sir. I’ll handle it personally,” Jamie assured him, understanding the gravity of the situation. Sebastian had always trusted Jamie’s loyalty and efficiency, and this matter was no different.
There was also a particular reason why he wanted his bodyguards to tail her every movement, one that he kept to himself.
He wanted to know every detail of her life, her whereabouts, who she was with, and what she was doing. It was as though an aggressive curiosity had taken hold of him, a desire to unravel every aspect of her existence like he was an obsessed stalker.
Sebastian couldn’t help it, especially after his last “involvement” with a woman ended on bitter terms more than seven years ago. Those scars from the past had made him overly cautious, unable to fully trust anyone again, and Kourtney was still a relative stranger to him. He figured he would get to know every inch of her with time and uncover if she was worthy of his trust.
“Sir, I also found out why Mrs. Woods was crying just like you instructed.” Jamie’s voice through the phone line jolted Sebastian back from his wandering thoughts.
“So what is it.”
“The Madame got dumped by her fiance for her sister earlier today. They were supposed to get married in about three weeks.”
“Hmmmm. I see.” Sebastian said before taking another sip from his glass of whiskey.
His already cold and icy gaze darkened even more with an unfathomable expression on his face. No one could guess what he was thinking at that moment.
***********
The next day, the entire Woods Corporation was abuzz with excitement and curiosity. As soon as the news of Sebastian’s unexpected marriage was made known on the company’s website, shockwaves rippled through the 80-story building.
The HR department which made the announcement was bombarded with questions, but they had little information to offer. Sebastian had been notoriously private about his personal life, and no one at the company had even an inkling that he was involved with someone, let alone getting married.
The employees couldn’t help but gather in groups, whispering and speculating about the mysterious and lucky woman who had captioned the heart of their ‘Stone-Hearted CEO.’
In one corner of the office, a group of female employees huddled together, sharing their thoughts with animated gestures and expressions.
“Can you believe it? President Woods, of all people, got married!” one of them exclaimed, still in shock. “And without any hint of a romance beforehand, it’s mind-boggling!”
“I know, right? And out of the blue too! I never thought I’d see the day our big boss got married. Did you see the shiny diamond ring on his finger? Another female staff replied, shaking her head in disbelief.
Everyone knew Sebastian so well. Even with the number of women begging for his attention, he refused to bat an eyelid at them, talk more of dating anyone for years now. So it was so shocking to them that he got married.
“With how he’s wearing the ring so proudly, he must have found someone truly special. I never expected him to break his own rules and tie the knot so suddenly!” one employee exclaimed, marveling at the revelation.
As the news continued to fly around, most female employees were particularly heartbroken, as they had secretly admired their boss from afar. They were also intrigued, trying to piece together the puzzle of who the mysterious bride might be.
“I wonder who she is! Do you think she works here, or is she someone from outside the company?” They all giggled, imagining scenarios of a secret romance blossoming in the office.
“I doubt it. President Woods has never shown any interest in dating anyone of us,” chimed in another.
“But what if she’s really someone from the office? You know, like those office romance fairytale stories where the billionaire CEO falls in love with an employee, and they marry secretly,” one of them wondered aloud.
“Yes, I always thought he had a soft spot for our beautiful Director Rachel Lind, you know. Maybe she’s the one he married,” one whispered.
“Nah… I think the big boss would never stoop that low to marry one of his workers. His wife is probably from the wealthy and elite circle. More like a famous diva, actress, heiress, or something!” another employee suggested, causing the discussions to heat up among the groups.
The excitement grew, and the atmosphere at the company became livelier than ever before. Some employees even made light-hearted bets about the bride’s occupation, family background, and nationality. Gossip filled the air as they speculated about her identity.
Some teasingly suggested that perhaps President Woods had finally met his match, someone equally strong-willed and unyielding. Others speculated that he might have gone for an arranged marriage or a contract marriage due to his usual aversion to women.
Meanwhile, at one corner of the Woods Corporation, in a lavishly decorated office, Rachel Lind, Sebastian’s longtime managerial director and executive board member, seemed particularly puzzled. She had been by his side for years, witnessing the countless times he had turned down dates and social events because of his ailment.
She knew about his allergy because she was one of the only few women who worked closely with him but, she didn’t dare to go too close. However, there were times when he treated her so well that some of the other staff even thought he might have feelings for her.
The sudden news of his marriage seemed to contradict everything she knew about him, leaving her burning with confusion and jealousy. She had secretly been pinning for him all these years, and the news left a sore taste in her mouth.
“Could it be that, he’s finally been cured? And who did he even marry?” Rachael whispered bitterly to herself.
She knew he’d been spending millions of dollars on his treatment for the past few years. And she’d hoped that when he finally became cured, he would look her way. All this time, she thought the ailment might be the only barrier holding him back from approaching her for a romantic relationship.
How could he just get married just like that? She couldn’t believe it. She wondered if he was just trying to do damage control against the news of his impotence.
“If he wanted a nominal wife to silence the rumors, he should have just come to me,” Rachael stressed as she rose from her desk.
There was only one way to know if his marriage to whoever was real, or not. And that is to find out if he has been cured of his allergy. She stepped out of her office, entering the elevator that led straight to the CEO’s office. Her heart was in her throat as the elevator ascended to the top floor.
