Chapter 83
Chapter 83
Malcolm lingered with a question on his mind, his hand still dabbing at a sweaty forehead.
“What’s on your mind?” Liam inquired.
“Commander-in-Chief! In three days, I’ve arranged a gathering for the Drunham City elite to celebrate our new alliance with the Walker
family’s legacy and our successful partnerships. I have here a few exclusive invites and would be honored if you and your lady would join us.”
Liam skimmed over the embossed invitation in his grasp and
remarked, “Just set it down here. I’ll attend when I find the time.”
“Understood!”
Malcolm laid the invitation on the table, snapped to attention with a salute, and exited Jade Manor.
Only after Malcolm had stepped through the grand gates of the
manor and settled into his car did the weight on his shoulders begin to fade, his back clammy from sweat. The thought of how many sought an audience with the elusive King Pendragon. Here he was, holding an invite to dine with the man himself, stirred a quiet pride
within him.
Meanwhile, at the Stone Mansion, chaos reigned in Cheryl’s quarters. She hurled objects in rage, her room a testament to her fury. After composing herself, she stormed out and headed straight for Yafe’s study.
“Dad! Have you really forgotten Celena’s past misdeeds? Are we
going to welcome her back into the Stone family and be the town’s laughingstock once more?”
What’s more, Cheryl thought, if Celena returned, where would that leave her standing?
In stark contrast to Cheryl’s distress, Yafe gave her a measured look and spoke calmly, “Why the distress? I know you better than you think. Don’t worry. Even if Celena rejoins our family, you’ll always be my cherished daughter.”
Yafe took a casual sip from his teacup before continuing, “Cheryl,
don’t get worked up. I’ve done my homework on this guy. Liam’s just a rookie fresh out of the service. The Cole family’s glory days are over, and now he’s just a nobody with empty pockets. Do you really think a guy with zero clout could snatch the Walker family project right out from under Malcolm? He’d be lucky to even get a foot in the door!”
“Is that so?”
Cheryl let out a scornful laugh. “I knew it! Does that loser Liam think he can play soldier and then waltz back into high society? After everything Celena’s done against the Stone family, she thinks she can just waltz back in? Dream on!”
The mere memory of Liam turning her engagement party into a circus made Cheryl seethe with rage, especially since Reginald had not even bothered to confront Liam about it. It gnawed at her. “Dad, Liam made a spectacle at my engagement to Patrick! It wrecked our ties with the Hughes family and cost us a fortune. Are we really going to
let that slide?”
Yafe’s face turned to stone, and a chilling glint appeared in his eyes. Let it slide? Not a chance. Sure, the Hughes family deals are on ice, but I’m on it. Plus, it was Grandpa’s big birthday bash, and I’ve been swamped. Let’s wait and see if Liam can even land that project
before we make our move.”
Cheryl’s nod came with a sense of triumph as she remembered the
day’s earlier events. “Liam gave Wasyl a piece of his mind today. And Wasyl? He left, threatening not to let Liam off the hook!”
“That’s just perfect,” Yafe said, his voice dripping with a dark delight. He smirked, pleased with the turn of events. “Let Wasyl make the first move. It saves us the trouble. And you, Cheryl need to get cozy with Wasyl. His family might not be top-tier, but they’re far from weak. They’re in on the Walker family’s deal, and we’ve been left out because of past beefs. If you can snag those Walker projects, Grandpa will be singing your praises. You’ll be the one calling the shots in the Stone family!”
