Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 231

Everett wasted no time, striding purposefully toward the Intensive Care Unit. His steps were long and urgent. Selena quickly followed in his wake, trying to calm her racing heart.

Callum stood there momentarily, watching them disappear down the corridor before he finally turned and walked off in a different direction, alone.

Inside the hospital room, the scene was somber. Josh lay there, hooked up to all sorts of machines, an oxygen mask covering his face. His skin was pale, almost ghostly, and the sight of him pulled at the heartstrings of anyone who saw him. Everett and Selena reached his bedside. Sensing their presence, Josh fought to open his heavy eyelids and removed the oxygen mask in an effort to speak.

"Everett, Selena, you're here..."

His voice was raspy, but he managed to take their hands and press them together with a firm grip.

Josh spoke with a bittersweet tone, "When I'm gone, don't be sad. Everyone has their time, but I wish I could've seen your kids. Promise me you'll take care of each other and bring some little ones into the Bennett family. Fill the house with laughter, okay?" Tears streamed down Selena's cheeks. Her words were caught in her throat.

With a look of hope, Josh turned to Everett. "Everett, promise me, or I won't rest easy..."

Everett's eyes, filled with sorrow, suddenly turned sharp and cold. His voice was laced with shock and a touch of anger. "Grandpa, are you not sick?"

Josh was momentarily stunned.

Had he not put on a good enough act?

But Everett wasn't fooled. Showing rare sternness, he scolded, "Grandpa, do you realize how worried everyone is? How could you make a joke out of something like this?"

Usually, it was Josh giving Everett a

hard time, but now the tables were turned, leaving Josh a bit

embarrassed. Knowing he'd stepped out of line, he didn't dare argue back. Instead, he looked to Selena for backup. "Selena, look how tough your husband is. I'm scared!"

Selena, still trying to process everything, eyed him suspiciously, "Grandpa, are you... really okay?"

Josh had no choice but to come

clean. "Well, there's something. I just couldn't resist my cravings and snuck out for a chicken leg at midnight. I didn't expect my stubborn heart to act up. But with the miracle worker, Callum, there's no need to worry."

"I just didn't want to upset this young grandson of mine, so I put on the act. Who knew he'd catch on so quickly."

Selena: "... Grandpa, you really deserve a scolding."

Josh gave everyone a fright, especially Everett. He looked like he was about to fall apart.

Josh's heart sank. "Selena, you're not on my side?"

Everett was done with Josh's theatrics. He called in the nurses and set even stricter rules right in front of Josh.

He even had Derick install cameras in the room and had them pointed directly at Josh to ensure someone was watching him around the clock.

Josh grumbled about his privacy being invaded and his rights being ignored.

"Selena, aren't you going to stand up for me? Look at how he's treating me!"

This time, Selena kept quiet, too. Josh's health couldn't handle many more scares like this; the next one might truly be the last.

Realizing his protests were futile, Josh resigned himself to his fate. It was his own doing, after all.

Having just come out of major surgery, he had been running on

sheer willpower. It wasn't long net

before he started to drift into a

restless sleep.
