The past
Lorraine
“What was the meaning of that?” I lashed out at him the moment we got home.
Thankfully, Victoria wasn’t at home so I could unleash my emotions without fear. Dexter was seated on the sofa, eyes following me as I paced to and fro frantically.
I was mad-not mad-indignant.
I felt like tearing down the walls of the house with my bare hands and to worsen it all, Dexter wasn’t saying anything.
“You know, I like it when you’re mad. It looks so good on you.” He chuckled, his long hands stretched on the chair.
Immediately, I fixed him with a glare which made him laugh. He got to his feet, his hands tucked away in the pocket of his pants with a grim smirk that sent tingles down my spine.
He advanced towards me while I contemplated on either staying on the spot or moving backwards. I chose the former option and waited for him to stop coming close.
“There’s no point in all of this. You don’t love me, why are you making the both of us miserable?” I broke down in tears, my body vibrating with anger.
He palmed my shoulder, training the most passionate gaze I’ve ever seen on me. “And who said that I don’t love you?”
“Huh?”
A sigh left his lips as he lowered his head and quickly lifted it up again. “I’m sorry for hurting you this way. My outing with Emilia was to protect you.”
I squinted my eyes in confusion. “Protect me? I don’t need protection from anything.” I protested, moving away from his grip. “If that is your excuse for hurting me over and over again then I’ll let you know how pathetic it is, Dexter.”
He flinched as if he had been whipped unexpectedly, then his lips twitched and began to stretch slowly as if he just realised something. “Do you still love me?”
I became short of words as his question threw me off balance.
“I don’t know,” I replied under my breath, then gulped, regaining my composure. “I don’t love you. I’m your wife so I should be concerned about who you go out with.”
“If you don’t love me then you shouldn’t be bothered about what I do. You are yet to tell me all that happened after that party, and every day I’m reminded that you slept with both of my friends.” He blurted, his voice sharp with anger.
That was what he thought of me?
A cheap girl that could allow anyone to get to me just like that.
“Don’t say anything you aren’t sure of, Dexter, you don’t even know the kind of wicked friends you have.” I warned, my tone was cold and I could hear his scoff, but if he wanted the truth then he’d get it.
“Friends that quickly told me to stay away from someone like you, yet I didn’t and today, I’m reminded of why I should have listened to them.” He replied, his expression clouded with disbelief and disappointment.
Anger surged through me as my palm connected with his cheek. His eyes dilated but he didn’t say anything, not like I wanted him to add more salt to the injury he had inflicted on me. “I hate you so much, Dexter.” I seethed, deciding to tell him my side of the story since we were already on the topic. “Liam and Blake cornered me that night after you left and showed me a sex video they took while we were making love. They told me that you were aware of it and it was a normal thing for all of them, but what you didn’t know was that it would leak if I didn’t sleep with them.”
“What?” He cut in. “They didn’t do that.” He shook his head vehemently, just as I expected.
“You can call them and ask them, though I’m not sure they’ll say the truth after all, they had plans of raping me if not for the security guard that interfered.” I admitted.
He collapsed onto the sofa, raking through his hair roughly. At this point I didn’t care about his reaction any more.
I didn’t care if he didn’t believe me. What mattered was the fact that I wasn’t keeping the truth to myself any more.
“Liam and Blake would never do such a thing. They knew that I liked you.” He said in their defense, tearing my heart further.
I gasped then gulped, angry at myself for expecting too much from him, maybe taking my side. “Your opinion on this matter isn’t my business. You knew that they would take videos but you didn’t care, all that mattered was having my body. I promise you Dexter, you will never have access to me again.” My body was trembling as each word left my mouth but I wasn’t going to stop. “I can’t wait for this sham to be over anyways.”
The next thing I got as a response was a flower vase hurled across the sitting room. Then the glass center table was tousled over. “I freaking loved You, Lorraine, with every fiber of my being I did, but when I returned and saw your sex video with another man in your house, I just couldn’t believe it.”
Another sex video with a stranger?
My heart thudded faster, my head reeling from the news. What did these men see in me?
My lips quavered. “I’m sorry, but I think I’m lost. I never had sex with them, Dexter. They aren’t even my type.”
He rose up from the chair sluggishly. His gaze averted from me as if he couldn’t afford to stare at me any longer. “While I was over there I kept thinking about you until I asked about you and Liam told me not to bother. What he said wasn’t clear at first, but when they sent me the video, I understood that it wasn’t worth it.” The admittance made my heart melt and then I realised who my real enemies were.
Oh God, I cried.
How could I have slept with someone in my step-father’s house without remembering? How was that even possible?
My body couldn’t bear the weight of the information but I willed myself to be strong. “So I’ll ask you the same question I’ve always been asking. Why did you go ahead and marry me, knowing how much of a slut I am?” It hurt to victimize myself but that was what he saw me as, and even though I tried to act nonchalant I was badly affected.
He strode towards me with an intimidating gaze that blazed with anger. “To take my revenge and protect you at the same time if it makes any sense.”
