A good news
Lorraine
“Whatever relationship I have with her is none of your business. The only reason I allow you to hang around me is because of that conversation.” He seethed.
Against my better reasoning, I expected him to blurt that I was his wife. I mentally slapped my face because something was definitely wrong with me.
She stomped her foot on the ground vehemently, trying to voice out words which remained stuck in her throat. Her jaw was clenched as if she was barely stopping herself from throwing a punch at Dexter. “You are so annoying.” She said through gritted teeth. “You promised to do whatever I wanted, is this how you keep to your word?”
Really?
He made a promise to her after confessing that there was nothing between them?
There and then, I realised that I’d been such a fool. Listening to their banters would do nothing to eliminate the pain I felt so I spun around and stormed off in search of a cafe.
Loud footsteps sounded after me but I wasn’t going to stop to listen to any of his lies. I’ve had enough.
My steps were halted by the firm grip of his hand on my wrist. I fixed a mean glare that caused him to give my wrist a break. “What do you want?” I asked harshly.
“You don’t understand, Lorraine.” He sighed in resignation, shaking his head slowly.
I scoffed, blinking hard to keep the stupid tears in my eyes from falling. “I’m not a dummy like your sister said the other time, I surely understand what is going on here.” I dragged in a deep breath and started talking with the pent up anger that had found a way out of its hole. “You married me just to toil with my feelings. To remind me that I’m weak and anyone can pull the strings and in a flash, I’ll be at their mercy. I might be wrong, but I’m not wrong about the fact that I hate you, and I don’t want to have anything to do with you.”
Dexter stared at me with a confused and blanched expression. There was no trace of nonchalance, all I saw was the vulnerability and a flicker of hurt.
“That’s not true, Lorraine.” He replied weakly.
I raked through my hair in frustration, letting out an angry cry. “Then why did you marry me in the first place? You’ve done nothing but cause me pain even when I don’t deserve it.”
“I can’t tell you why.” He disagreed calmly, the familiar unreadable mask covering the ball of emotions he’d revealed earlier.
A dark laughter rang out of my throat. “Then let me go.” I croaked.
With an intense stare that could see right through my soul and his jaw tightly clenched, he breathed, “Never.” Then walked away.
Fury slammed through me as I watched him walk away with the realisation that I wouldn’t be able to do anything even though I tried.
Dexter could get whatever he wanted without breaking a sweat and he got me that same way. The question I kept asking myself was if he would marry me after what happened in the past.
The answer came almost immediately. It was scary, hurtful and it went so fast in unlocking the box of pain that I’d hidden at the farthest part of my mind.
I picked myself up and returned to the hall. My break was over already and with how tired I was, I didn’t need anyone to remind me of my inadequacies.
Victoria stopped me just before the entrance. “I’ve been watching you and what happened right now doesn’t look like a discussion between a boss and his maid.” She pinched her chin as if in deep thought. “It seems like you were really heartbroken that he was Emilia.” She cackled.
“Get out of my way.” I growled as she flinched, putting a small distance between us.
“Now the maid talks back,” She said with an air of indifference. “You don’t really know how to mask your feelings, do you?” She taunted me.
I shut my eyes and counted to ten before thinking of a reasonable reply. “Minding your business will help you a lot. Do you know that?” I said calmly.
She beamed at me with a frown, surprised at my comeback. “What did you just say to me?” Her eyes danced with fury.
“What you heard me say, Miss Hemmingway. The fact that you are my boss’s sister doesn’t mean you have to bully me around. I’m a human with feelings and I won’t allow anyone to treat me less.” I warned with a note of seriousness.
It felt good to finally let her know that I wouldn’t be pushed around by her or anyone else. “If you have nothing else to say to me, I’d like to take my leave now.”
Her lips were still snapped shut so I took it that she had nothing else to say until she obstructed my path with her signature bitch face. “I know you like my brother a lot, I mean, you couldn’t even hide how hurt you were when you saw him with Emilia and even if you both say that you are his maid, I don’t believe it.”
“So what are you trying to say?”
Her eyes flickered with anger. “Stay away from my brother. You are not his type and you will never be.”
I pushed closer to her, my gaze cold as ice. “That’s what I’ve been doing for a long time now, but he doesn’t know how to stay away.” Her brows furrowed in confusion, but I wasn’t going to say more. “Have a nice day.” I said sweetly and headed for the hall.
My steps were fluid and fast because I calculated that they would have started the process of shortlisting while Victoria kept me outside distracted.
Stefan passed a look of disapproval at me as I joined the line of models who were to be picked. “You are late.” He rebuked me sternly and before I could explain what happened, Dexter cut in.
“Whatever happened is on me. Let’s continue.” He said with his gaze on me, like he was tired of being anywhere but here.
Over ten people had been selected already causing me to be nervous. The confidence that enveloped me when I was with Victoria had been drained and now I wanted nothing more than to know my fate.
“Lorraine Hills,” Stefan said curtly, not passing off any hint of my success or failure. “Congratulations, you have been selected to be a part of the mini runway show. Don’t forget to do your best.”
My joy knew no bounds as a loud scream of happiness flew from my lips. Stella, my trainer, didn’t hesitate in giving me a hug while a few others who didn’t feel any negative thing for me whispered congratulatory words to me.
But everything that happened didn’t measure up to the surprise I felt when Dexter came forward and gave me a side hug which was so warm and cozy that I forgot how angry I’d been.
With a genuinely happy voice, he said. “Congratulations, princess. I’m really happy for you.”
