Chapter Thirty-six
“The condom what? Jeez, how the fuck can you do that? nevermind… don’t answer it.” Paolo sounded a bit shocked yet he was amused by his situation.
“Just, hack the feed to her hallway. Nothing should happen, but I need her safe. I’ll be back in an hour maximum two, and don’t say anything to Peter.”
Matteo ended the call and took a taxi to the nearest jewelry store after he asks the hotel concierge before he leaves the hotel.
He didn’t know how to choose a ring, he hasn’t got a clue about jewelry all he knows it’s gotta be expensive. But then he was reminded of Amara’s simple taste then he groaned when the sales lady was giving him so many choices. He has been looking for more than half an hour and he was running out of time.
“Sir, I advise you to take a couple of pictures and send it to her best friend, or someone close to her who knows her taste…” the woman looked at him with pity, he cleared his throat when he had a bright idea to call his beloved sister for her impeccable taste.
“Alessia, I need a favor. Don’t ask questions, just pick one. I need a simple yet expensive one.” He called her up and asked her for help without even a proper greet.
“Brother! stop with the puzzles. What is it?” she sounded annoyed, Alessia has always been the proper sister, she likes a certain arrangement of things. And being presented with a puzzling phone call was not how she likes things.
Matteo took a deep breath, knowing she wouldn’t let this one go. But the ring would be crucial, Amara needs to be wowed.
“Don’t tell anyone just yet, I don’t want you to jinx it.”
“Matteo! seriously, jinx? what are you ten?” she laughed but knows her brother has always been such a dear and all the women in their family loved him. Well, considering he’s the only man in the family and they all treated him with so much love that he would suffocate if he stayed too long at his mom’s.
“I’ll send you the pictures, just pick the best one okay?”
She grumbled but said yes and told him to send the pictures already.
“Oh… my… freaking… GOD!!! Matteo! don’t tell me you get a girl pregnant? mamma will be so upset with you!”
“What? why would you think that?! no! I mean… I don’t know, fuck! Alessia just pick the ring! I’m late already!”
“Oh brother, you have to explain yourself to mamma later. Bring your fiance this weekend we’ll celebrate…”
“The RING! Alessia…” he said lowly as his fingers keep tapping on the glass display impatiently. While the sales lady was stepping back a bit giving him some privacy.
“Okay… okay… still an inpatient big bear. Go with the third one on the left, always a safe choice on getting the cushion cut. Now if you want to take a step further go with a color diamond, I’d say a pink or yellow diamond…”
Half an hour later he was finally out of the jewelry store feeling so exhausted. He had never felt so tired in his entire life before.
He finally reaches Amara’s suite and she greeted him at the door, already dressed and looking a bit quiet then she walks back to the table and stirred her coffee.
“I’ve ordered your breakfast, I assumed you haven’t had yours? well, it’s technically brunch now…”
She was babbling, Amara was sure that she heard him when he said that he loves her. She was not sure as to why he left her in a hurry, was he getting her the morning after pill?
he must be, she thought as she kept on busying herself to his breakfast order then trying to relax by making a cup of coffee.
“Amara,” he started his words then she puts a finger on his lips.
“Give me.” She cuts his words, and he was surprised that she knows already.
“Look, I know I’m not good with words…”
“No, you’re not.” She finally smiled at his confession.
“Amara…”
“Look, can we just get it over with?” she was getting upset with him, at that time she was one hundred percent sure that he was out buying her the morning after pill.
She didn’t want it, but it was his right too. If he didn’t want the baby, then… but in the middle of her thought, she had an epiphany that it’s her body. If she was indeed pregnant she might want to keep it.
But then she was confused when he kneeled on the floor. Wait…
“Seriously Matteo, I don’t think this is the time, not after the scare that we just had.”
But then she blushed when he was kneeling on one knee, then taking out the blue velvet box from his pocket.
No… no… can’t be…
“Amara… I love you, and I know maybe you don’t. But this morning, with the condom and all, well… I think we should get married. You know just in case. I mean, I know I love you, but I don’t know if you… you know…”
Amara was crying, it was the worst proposal she ever heard. And yet it was coming out of her Matteo, she had thought the worst of him. Yet he was kneeling, showing her the most beautiful pink diamond engagement ring with the simplest design that she actually liked.
“… so, would you? marry me?”
He was still babbling, when all she could do was hear him and saw him break a sweat on his forehead.
She wanted him, Amara knows she loves him and hated when he was away from her. But could it be that easy? she contemplates her decision, then looked at his face. The face of a man who was so sure that he loves her, and wanted to marry her just because she might be pregnant.
It took another sweat to trail down the side of his forehead until she eventually nodded at him. She was still crying, Amara had thought that he wanted to give her the pill, but then he was putting a ring on her finger.
Then she shook her head at him, she was still too happy and sad at the same time to talk.
“No? you don’t want to marry me?” he looked disappointed and she was smiling while still crying at her big Italian brute.
“I do…” then she pointed him the right finger for the ring, making him sigh as he thought the worst already.
“Don’t ever scare me like that again.” He got up, feeling a bit woozy like he had drained his energy from stressing over the ring shopping and the proposal alone.
Amara’s hand was still in his when he pulled her closer and kissed her damp lips from her tears. She backed away to get a tissue and blow her nose.
“Okay, let’s try this again.” She smiled and put her hand to his broad chest, his hands circled her small waist and she trailed her hands to his neck and pulled him down for a kiss.
It was the sweetest one they ever share, he took his time in kissing her lips, licking her neck, and caressing her body until they were both breathless and she whispered that she loves him too.
“Amara,” he caressed her cheek and kissed her forehead softly. He didn’t expect her to confess her love, but she did and he couldn’t wish for anything more. His life was suddenly perfect.
“… I wish the condom broke three weeks ago.”
“Matteo, shut up. You’re ruining the moment.” She smiled and slapped his chest, but tiptoed and reach up for another kiss.
“Okay, we should have our celebratory brunch. I’m getting dizzy from all this tension, I’m not up for another one obviously.”
“Matteo! how many wives do you want?”
“Wife! God, I can’t wait to call you my wife and have you for my daily meal.”
She blushed from his words but pouted when he pulled her onto his lap.
“One, my love. Only you…”
“There, stop right there.” She put her finger on his lips not wanting him to ruin another moment. But then he winked and pull her closer for another kiss.
“I love you… now we just have to break the news to my mom. My sister told me to bring you to our family dinner.”
“Matteo…”
“Yup, we’re doing this baby. You’re meeting my very loud family.”
Her heart warms on the inside. Family. She had never been invited to any of her boyfriend’s family. Well, in this case, fiance.
They were about to eat their brunch when his phone buzzed with an incoming call.
“The boys.”
