Chapter 7 Knowing How To Repay Kindness

Nathael fell into deep thought, remaining silent. Maggie avoided eye contact and hurriedly left, as if fleeing in panic.

How embarrassing!

As she stepped out of the door, she noticed Marcello squatting on the front steps with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. His beautiful peach blossom eyes were filled with mischievous charm. Upon hearing the noise, he turned his head and glanced at her. Realizing it was Maggie, Marcello raised an eyebrow and smirked.

“Wow, that was quick. My little uncle really can’t handle it.”

Maggie’s face flushed crimson, wishing she could run away. How humiliating! Marcello chuckled, extinguishing the cigarette. He turned and entered the room only when she had disappeared entirely from sight. “I wondered why you were acting so strangely while digging your own grave.

It turns out it’s all for a woman,” Marcello teased, not mincing his words. Nathael remained expressionless, calmly replying, “Just shut your mouth.” Marcello raised an eyebrow, casually asking, “What’s your plan for the project in Chronopolis? Those elders nearly lost their minds when they heard you switched partners from the Adams to the Camerons. Yet none of them dared to ask you directly, so they sent me to find out.”

After hearing Marcello talk about the business, Nathael wondered momentarily. The words Maggie didn’t hold back resurfaced in his mind. A few seconds later, he lowered his eyes and said in a deep voice, “No change.” Hearing this, Marcello laughed and said, “Okay. You’ve said it. Now, everyone can rest easy. But, Uncle, you’ve had your way with the girl, and now you’re turning your back on her. That’s not very gentlemanly.”

Nathael picked up an apple from the coffee table and threw it at him, saying, “Shut up.”

Marcello wasn’t angry. He caught the apple and said, “Take it easy. The adopted daughter of the Camerons is pretty, but I’m afraid she’s not good enough to be my sister-in-law.”

“Get out!”

Marcello glanced at him with a smirk on his lips. He tossed the apple and left. It wasn’t his fault for overthinking. Although Nathael was his uncle in name, they were only a few years apart. Over the years, whenever something involved Maggie, Nathael would act out of character. As for how Nathael was out of character? Marcello didn’t know how to describe it, but it was probably like a genius suddenly turning into a fool.

After Maggie arrived home, she glanced at the numerous missed calls from Joseph and ignored them. After showering and tidying up, she finally opened her laptop and carefully read through the information she had copied from Nathael’s computer. Then, she began editing the content. She remembered that in her previous life, the land in the Crestview District was bought by the Taylors. They invested in a shopping mall, but they lost everything due to a change in the subway route.

Well, I’ll do a good deed and give it to the Camerons. Maggie edited the bidding content for the land in the Crestview District and added it to Nathael’s target projects. Hmm, the resort on Halms Island. It ended up in the hands of the Baileys in its previous life. Halms Island was home to a large number of egrets every year, so the resort project was highly anticipated from the start. Unfortunately, just as the Baileys were full of ambition and ready to start the business, the water on Halms Island became contaminated. Hundreds of egrets died on Halms Island, causing an uproar, and the resort project on Halms Island was abandoned.

Well, give it to the Camerons. As a person, I should know how to repay kindness. After adding the Halms Island project, Maggie noticed a technology company called Greenlight in Nathael’s projects. The company focused on environmental innovation. Greenlight, although not widely known, developed wastewater purification equipment that significantly improved efficiency and reduced costs. Through the implementation of new policies, investment from Nathael, and effective marketing, Greenlight quickly replaced the existing equipment on the market and achieved great success.

Meanwhile, there was another environmental protection company called Rony Technology. Its founder, Rony Blackwoods, gained recognition for actively participating in nationwide efforts and demonstrating strong marketing skills. The equipment developed by Rony Technology was similar to that of Greenlight. Unfortunately, Rony Blackwoods was all talk and no action. The products he designed were flashy but impractical, and he successfully deceived many people. Maggie remembered that Ronald had also invested in Rony Technology in her previous life, but unfortunately, he lost to the Garcias.

As a result, when Rony Technology went bankrupt, the Camerons were delighted by the Garcias’ misfortune for a long time. Without hesitation, she changed Nathael’s investment plan from Greenlight to Rony Technology. As a good person, I should accumulate good deeds. After working for over half an hour, Maggie looked at the modified document with satisfaction. She ignored Joseph’s repeated calls and sent the copy directly to his email.

As she looked at the now silent phone, Maggie’s almond-shaped eyes turned cold. With these projects, even if the Camerons didn’t perish, they would surely suffer! In this life, I will never let them have a good day!

Not long after, the phone rang again. She thought it was Joseph, but instead, she saw the name Vanessa Brown. Maggie was momentarily stunned, a trace of self-mockery flashing in her eyes. This was her so-called best friend from her previous life. She had stolen her identity, hurt her family, and even betrayed her by getting together with Joseph! Maggie lowered her gaze and answered the call.

“Maggie, why didn’t you pick up earlier? How are you? I heard that you were … you were … ”

The voice on the other end of the phone was filled with anxiety, almost on the verge of tears. But if one listened carefully, a hint of rejoicing over another’s misfortune could be detected.

“How did you find out?” Maggie asked casually.

Vanessa paused, sensing the distance in her tone, but assumed it was due to her upset state. “I heard from Joseph. Maggie, how did this happen? How are you? I’m worried about you. I know you’re not feeling well. I’ll come over after work to keep you company.”

“Tomorrow night. I need some time alone,” replied Maggie, her almond eyes icy and her voice deliberately fragile.

Upon hearing this, Vanessa agreed, “Okay. I’ll come over tomorrow. Maggie, this is nothing. Just think of it as a minor setback. Joseph won’t mind. You must stay strong. We will all support you in seeking justice!”

As Vanessa repeatedly mentioned the incident, a hint of mockery flashed in Maggie’s eyes. In her previous life, she mistakenly believed that she had an intimate relationship with Nathael and was too distraught to notice Vanessa’s reaction. But now, many things have started to make sense.

After ending the call, Maggie remembered something and retrieved a jade pendant from the drawer. The pendant was carved in the shape of a lock, with a transparent white color and a few strands of clear green floating within it. Delicately carved into it was a magpie landing on a branch. Maggie’s fingertips gently brushed against the magpie on the pendant, feeling its cool and smooth texture. The pendant was her only possession when she ended up in the orphanage. It was also proof of her identity. In her previous life, not long after Vanessa’s sudden visit, she discovered that the pendant had gone missing.

Initially, she didn’t pay much attention to it. But now, knowing that Mr. and Mrs. Adam were her biological parents and with Vanessa about to assume the role of the lost daughter of the Adams in a matter of days, how could Maggie not grasp the situation?
