Chapter 259
Chapter 259
All Evander wanted was for Angeline to be safe, and he was happy to keep watch over her from the shadows.
That doesn't mean I can sit on my hands while she's looking so upset!
As that thought crossed his mind, he knelt to meet Angeline's gaze and grasped her shoulders.
“They said you haven't eaten in a long time. Let me feed you some oatmeal.”
Angeline looked up as he spoke, revealing a pair of bloodshot eyes.
Evander's heart clenched with pain.
He lifted a small bowl and stirred the hot oatmeal it held, blowing on the surface to cool it down. Then, he brought the bowl closer to Angeline's face and said gently. “Open your mouth.”
Angeline stared silently at him. A second later, every negative emotion in her heart exploded.
She reached out and slapped the spoon out of his hand.
“Enough!”
She continued to yell hoarsely, “Just how long are you planning on keeping up tliis act, Evander? Did you really think I wouldn't find out about your engagement to Olivine?”
The ceramic spoon shattered into pieces, no different from the state of their relationship.
Evander appeared somber as he placed the bowl on a nearby table. “You can have some oatmeal once it's cooler.”
Angeline continued staring at him and demanded. “Stop skirting the question! Answer me!”
“What you've read is the truth. I won't deny it.”
He seemed mentally prepared for her interrogation and fielded her question steadily.
His reply crushed Angeline's last slu ed of hope.
She curled into herself on the chair, her limbs ice-cold. A long time passed before she asked shakily, “When did you decide to choose Olivine?”
The room plunged into silence.
Tears welled in Angeline's eyes. She shot Evander an aggrieved look, seeming like a kid who had had her toy taken away from her.
Evander returned her stare, agony palpable in liis gaze. He coaxed her, “That's not important, Angeline. The most important thing now is for you to get back on your feet and continue to live. If you want to return to your life as a celebrity, I'll pay your penalty for breaching the contract. Golding Group will also give you the best resources to make a comeback.”
After he spoke, Evander whipped out a black card from liis wallet and handed it to Angeline.
He explained, “This card has no spending limit. If you're til ed of working, you can explore other hobbies as well, as long as you're happy.”
The organized maimer in which he handled Angeline's affairs suggested that he had been plaiming tliis for a long time.
Angeline was about to burst into tears. She closed her eyes, trying to shield the disappointment in her gaze.
Evander's heart ached for her, and his resolve began to waver.
Perhaps my way of doing tilings isn't the best option for Angeline.
His hand reached out to caress Angeline's cheek. He was about to wipe her tears when she turned away from liis touch.
She spat coldly, “Don't touch me! You disgust me.”
Angeline could not be bothered to hide her feelings any longer.
Her attitude cut Evander to the quick. His arm hovered in mid-air for a while before falling back to liis side.
Evander quickly composed himself and resumed a withdrawn expression before asking, “So. what's it going to be? What will you choose?”
He sounded as indifferent as if he were negotiating a cut-throat business deal.
Angeline failed to rein in her anger. She abruptly stood up and raised her hand, slapping Evander fiercely across the face.
She bellowed, “You b*stard!”
The slap reverberated through the room as Angeline's hand throbbed with pain.
Evander's head was flung to the side from the impact. A painfully red handprint appeared on liis fail' cheek.
Angeline was taken aback by her actions, yet she did not regret it one bit. Instead, she shot him an indignant glare and declared. “I choose neither. If I truly wanted your money, I would never have bothered caring for Floretta for such a long time. I'm perfectly fine to end our relationship here, so let's
not talk to each other again except regarding Floretta's matters. Don't ever try to humiliate me by paying me off again!”
After her vicious parting remarks, she hurled the black card back at its original owner.
She reveled in satisfaction at the action.
Angeline took every relationship seriously, and after Hanson and Joseline's betrayal five years ago, she had been hesitant to offer her entire heart to anyone.
When Evander appeared, she truly believed he was the one. She never expected to find herself betrayed yet again.
If it's time to let go, I'll make sure tliis is a clean break!
Meanwhile, the black card slashed Evander's cheek, leaving behind a thin streak of blood.
Evander pursed his lips but stopped himself from muttering a word of protest.
He felt a sharp pain in his heart as he observed Angeline's determination in cutting ties with him.
Wasn't tliis exactly what I wanted?
Alas, Evander ignored the emotions crashing in his heart for the greater good. The cold, indifferent mask reappeared, and he uttered, “As long as you've thought tilings through.”
The simple comment tipped Angeline off about how heartless Evander was about their relationship.
She was so overcome with emotion that she swayed on her feet, almost losing her balance. Once she collected herself, her lips curved into a sneer, and she muttered. “Don't worry. I know exactly where I stand. Let's never contact each other again after today.”
Evander grunted in reply.
He took a bunch of house keys from his pocket and slowly passed them to Angeline.
“These are your house keys: they're back where they belong. Take care of yourself. You can call Francesca whenever you miss Floretta.”
With that, Evander left the room without sparing her a final glance.
Angeline's gaze was affixed to the floor-to-ceiling window in her room. She could see liis tall figure exiting the room through the window's reflection.
As he left, he closed the door with a quiet click as though fearfill of disturbing her.
The ones who truly wished to leave always made the least fuss.
Angeline's lashes quivered as tears streamed down her face against her will. She covered her nose and mouth, trying to muffle the sound of her sobs, even as she gave in to the anguish in her heart.
The whole situation felt so surreal that she wondered if her relationship with Evander had been nothing more than a wonderful dream.
She had finally awoken from her long slumber to the bitter truth, and she struggled to come to terms with the fact that he was leaving her so soon.
Perhaps our relationship was destined to end tliis way since the first time we crossed paths five years ago...
Floretta's wails suddenly rang out from the living room. “I'm not going! You're a bad daddy! I don't want Olivine as my mommy!”
Her distressed cries echoed throughout the house while Francesca tried to soothe the young girl, “Ms. Floretta. please don't throw a tantrum, okay?”
