Leaving For Good
It has been three days since that fateful night. Amber has not spoken to Devlin about that night. She remained quiet and only answered when asked about trivial questions.
Devlin stayed in the penthouse with her hoping that he could fix things between them. He has not reported to his company for two days. However, he needs to go today since there is an important meeting with the shareholders. He does not want to leave Amber without even fixing the problem he created. He still regretted that every single moment.
“Baby, I need to go to the office today. When I get back, we have to talk about what happened. Please give me a chance, baby.” Again, she did not respond to him except to nod her head.
Devlin had to scratch his nape. He is getting frustrated from her continued silence. He has been trying to be patient with her. He had to because it was his fault in the first place. Every time he remembers that moment, he just wanted to hurt himself. That was a very beautiful moment for them. But he had to screw it up with his carelessness.
He even asked himself several times why he said what he said. If he is not stupid, then he does not know what he is. And he is getting frustrated because he can’t force Amber to accept his apologies. He has to show her that he really loves her. She needs that assurance from him. And Raven was just a thing of the past.
Amber was on the sofa, watching the TV. She did not even glance at him. Devlin only kissed her forehead before he walked away to the elevator.
“Baby, I will be right back as soon as I finish the meeting.” He did not wait anymore for her answer. He knows that he will only meet her silence. Her silent treatment is killing him. He rather sees her angry or sad. Or say some insulting words to him. It is like she has given up on something. She has given up whatever she feels for him. There is no emotion on her face.
The moment Devlin left, Amber was in a flurry of actions. Now is her chance to leave the penthouse while Devlin is still away. She already planned her escape. If Devlin had not stayed for three days with her, she could have been somewhere far from him.
She immediately took her luggage and the old clothes she brought with her. She left everything that Devlin gave her. They were neatly arranged in her closet. She already made a letter to Devlin, telling everything she thought and felt about their ‘relationship’. She has to leave for her sanity. If she continues to be with Devlin, she would only lose herself. That is not the kind of relationship she wants. She wants a relationship where she would grow with the person she is with. But that is not the case between them.
A few minutes later, she was already inside the cab. Yesterday, she called Attorney Harrison if they could meet. She never told him that she is planning to leave Devlin for good.
She stopped at a coffee shop almost close to the airport. Attorney Harrison came late but it was fine. She still has plenty of time before her flight.
“Good morning, Attorney Harrison.” She greeted the lawyer with enthusiasm although her eyes looked sad.
“Good morning to you, Mrs. Wesley.” Came the smiling face of Attorney Harrison. Amber immediately called the waiter to take the order of Attorney Harrison. He only ordered a bottle of water.
“So tell me, what is wrong? You don’t look fine to me.” The lawyer must have noticed that she is a bit agitated. She keeps looking around, afraid that Devlin would appear out of nowhere. He may have to punish her some more once he finds out what she did.
“I prepared this official letter relinquishing all the properties and finances that I inherited from Grandma Olivia. You can do whatever you want with it. I really have no wish to have those.” She said sadly. She could not bring herself the price she had to pay just because she was given some portions of Grandma Olivia’s wealth. She regretted everything except knowing Grandma Olivia.
“I am so sorry. I know that I should not intrude in your personal life but does Devlin know about this?” Attorney Harrison asked gently. He saw the look on Amber’s face. He saw the sorrow that she could not hide from her eyes. He saw her shaking hands. She was far from the woman he saw the first time. She was enthusiastic, fierce, smart and beautiful. She lost that glow in her eyes. He wondered what happened between her and Devlin.
“If I could be of any help to you, please tell me.” He wanted to console her since she really looks lost.
‘Whatever happened to her, it must be really bad.’ Attorney Lawson thought to himself.
“Thank you so much, Attorney Harrison. Your presence is enough. And by the way, there is one thing I would like to request from you.” She said, pausing to look at Attorney Harrison. She is not sure if she is doing the right thing. It did not cross her mind until she met Attorney Harrison.
“What is it?” He asked, prodding her to tell him more. She looked hesitant.
“Uhmmm… I would like to file a divorce. Could you please help me?” She said anxiously while waiting for any reaction from Attorney Harrison. But it didn’t come.
“I will see what I can do about that. But you have to understand that the moment you file a divorce, it could get messy. Let’s hope that Devlin would not contest it. Otherwise, your divorce will be granted quickly.” He paused for a bit then continued.
“Are you sure about all your decisions? You know that Mr. Wesley is not an easy person to deal with.” She understood his warning but there is no other way to go.
“I have never been this certain. I will keep in touch with you, Attorney Harrison.” She said while already calling the waiter for the bill.
“Where are you going?” The lawyer could not help but ask the distraught woman in front of him.
“Home.” She simply said and smiled genuinely for the first time after a few days of exhaustive crying.
“Very well. I wish you all the best, Ms. Adams. Let’s keep in touch.” The lawyer did not ask her further for information.
“Thank you so much, Attorney Harrison. You don’t know it but your presence today means a lot to me.” She said gratefully. She knows in her heart that she could trust the old man. He has been Grandma Olivia’s confidante for years.
They separated ways. The lawyer went back to his office, informing her that he will update her about the filing for her divorce.
At the airport, she checked her phone but she only got some messages from Devlin. She decided to shut down her phone before he will find out that she is not in the penthouse.
An hour later, she was already inside the plane bound to California. She can’t wait to be with her grandma. A smile of relief crossed her face. She made the wise decision to leave before she would completely destroy herself. She is not scared of Devlin anymore. She can finally let go of everything that she has been holding in her chest these past few days. She will be better. And if ever they cross paths again in the future, she will be a changed person. Far from the naive, foolish woman that she is now. And she vows that she will never stoop low for any man’s love again.
