Chapter 613
Chapter 613
Lucas stood there, frozen, not moving an inch.
Chloe hurried over, her voice filled with worry, "What happened? How's Linda?"
The chief surgeon pulled down his mask, his expression grave. "We've managed to stop the bleeding for now, but her injuries are severe. Her organs are damaged, and since she just had a C-section, there's a constant risk of organ failure."
Linda was wheeled into the ICU, and Chloe stood at the door, dazed and overwhelmed.
Connor soon joined her, wrapping his arms around her from behind. "Lean on me, take a breather."
Ever since Linda got shot, Chloe felt like her nerves were strung as tight as a bow. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, like she was walking through a haze or being roasted over open flames. Every part of her insides felt like they were being tortured.
But here, in Connor's arms, Chloe's tension eased just a bit. She relaxed, letting herself sink into his embrace, even as tears found their way down her cheeks.
"What about Linda's baby?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Connor replied, "The initial checkup didn't show any major issues, but since the baby was premature, it's weak and needs to stay in an incubator for a while."
The image of the baby's face, blue and struggling for breath, flashed through Chloe's mind, sending a shiver down her spine. The memory was still fresh, still terrifying. She hadn't dared to look at the baby again. Holding it felt like cradling a world of weight.
Chloe didn't ask more about the baby. She paused, gathering her thoughts.
Connor broke the silence, "I talked to the police. The shooter, Ricky, was actually after you. Do you know him?"
Hearing Ricky's name made Chloe's body tense. Yes, she knew Ricky. But Connor wasn't fully aware of the connection between them. After all, she'd enlisted a friend's help when she dug into Ricky's background.
The last time, she'd wiped out Ricky's debt of thirty million, leaving a chunk of three million. She never truly intended to help him pay off his debts. Thirty million or three million, it was all the same to him. Later, a money manager called her specifically to say they'd cut off one of his fingers as a lesson. Content
Could he have held a grudge because of that? Chloe doubted it. The incident was days old, and it seemed too trivial for such drastic action.
"How did Ricky even get in? How could he crash the Moncada family wedding?" she wondered aloud. "And how did he know I'd be there? If he wanted to take me out, why doût at such a big, crowded event? That's just asking to get caught."
Chloe's face grew cold and serious. "Where is he now?" Connor replied, "He's dead. Shot himself."
Chloe's heart skipped a beat. "Dead?"
Connor continued, "He got exposed at the wedding but managed to grab a hostage and escape. Instead of laying low, he went back home, set it on fire trying to take the hostage down with him. But the hostage escaped, and he ended up shooting himself."
Connor's tone turned even colder, "Guess who the hostage was?"
"Who?"
"Lisa."
Hearing Lisa's name, Chloe felt a sharp throb in her temples. But almost immediately, she pieced it together. Her lips curled into a cold smirk. "So, it was her. I really underestimated her. She actually had the guts to kill."
