The Fiery Queen
Chapter 42 The Fiery Queen
Nina’s face paled as she tightened her grip on the steering wheel while watching Andrea enter her car and drive off. She couldn’t sleep a wink over the night as her thoughts roamed. She was only thankful that the office wouldn’t be resuming until tomorrow.
What she did to Dawn was uncalled for, and Nina wouldn’t be surprised if she found the cop on her tail. All of her outbursts and the discomfort that comes with being pregnant and having her hormones do whatever it is they like to make her so angry that she wishes she had enough courage to get a gun and pump a few bullets into Asher and Andrea.
Tears laced her eyes heavily. Nina gasped in a bid to catch her breath. It is all their fault. Their actions threw all her years of hard work, dedication, and unwavering trust to the wind. And she is left with nothing. Her hand rubbed at her belly unconsciously. If only she were not pregnant, maybe it would have been easier to move on with her life and not have a fragment of her painful past tagging along everywhere she goes.
She tries hard not to regret her decision to keep it, but the thoughts never cease. Nina bowed her head shamefully, disappointed in herself for seeing her unborn child as a hindrance. Wiping the tears off quickly, she raised her head to look at the house again.
Asher’s cars are still parked outside; having a glimpse of every vehicle he rides means he is at the house. Nina didn’t think about what she intended to do as she exited the car, determined to storm the house. Suddenly, a figure appeared in front of her, blocking her pathway.
Nina gasped in fear. “What are you doing here?”
Tania gave her a displeased look. “Get in the car first.” She ordered, opening the car door.
She waited until Nina was tucked back in the car safely before entering on the other side.
“Did you follow me?” Nina asked, finding her voice.
“Yes, I did. And I am glad that I followed my instincts. Or else you would have gone into the house. What do you intend to go do in there?”
Her eyes watered again. “I-I don’t know, Tania. I want to take a go at them and watch him suffer. They are the reason for all of this.”
“It has been almost five months since you left this house. Why are you back all of a sudden? Don’t you have it all planned out? I thought you were doing fine?”
“I thought I was too.”
“When you returned last night and insisted on retiring to your room. I had a gut feeling something was troubling you. Talk to me, Nina. You know you can.”
Nina let the tears flow freely. Intertwining her fingers, she looked like a vulnerable child. “I have tried everything I can to act unbothered. Acting like I have everything under control.” She looked up at Tania, teary-eyed. “But it’s all a facade, Tania. I am broken to shreds inside. I can’t wrap my head around this miserable life of mine. How-how did I get here? I worked hard for years to become the best in my field and an amazing wife. Yet Andrea and Asher ripped everything off me in one night. What did I ever do to deserve it? I-I need Asher to answer my questions. I need to know…” Her voice trailed off as she sobbed.
Tania watched her sob loudly. Ever since that doom-filled night, she has never seen Nina this broken. Tania’s heart went out to her, wishing she could do something to help ease her pain. Tania sniffed back; the tears made their way to her own eyes. She pulled Nina into a warm embrace, caressing her hair slowly.
“It’s okay, mama. You are going to be just fine. It’s okay.” She consoled.
The car was quiet except for Nina’s sobs. Tania waited for her to get herself together. Nina eventually calmed down a few minutes later. She let out a dry chuckle.
“I-I am so sorry. It must be the hormones. I wouldn’t do this, you know that.”
Tania smiled weakly. “There is no need to feel ashamed in front of me. You are a strong woman; crying won’t take that away from you. I know it must be hard starting from scratch. But I must say, you have outdone yourself. Jace told me how hardworking you are, and that is something some women who have experienced the same issue rarely do. Despite your condition, you have proven yourself to be a brilliant worker. And that is proof enough to show how amazing you are. And I can assure you I am not sugarcoating it. You do amazingly well.”
Nina wiped off the tears. “Maybe. Maybe not.” She shrugged.
She chuckled. “You know you are brilliant. Take the compliments when they come. So, what happened at the party?”
The image of what went down at the restroom flashed Nina’s eyes, causing her to cringe. “Promise you will not rebuke me.” She begged with her eyes.
“It depends. What did you do?”
“The reason I am so scared is because I might lose my job.”
Tania furrowed her brows. “Why? What did you do? Did you offend Xander or his parents?”
She scratched the back of her neck. “I sort of beat up the COO of the company.”
There was still apparent confusion written on her face. “Is the COO that important?”
“Yeah, she is more like the second in command after Xander. She is Dawn, and I didn’t tell you about her because I didn’t think it was worth talking about. I learned that she is Xander’s childhood friend, and now they work together. I think she might be interested in Xander beyond friendship. She sees me as a threat and takes every chance to attack me-” She paused for effect.
Tania blinked back like a thirsty folk. “Come on now, out with it.”
“She said something foul about my pregnancy, and I lost it. With Jace’s help, I followed her to the restroom and stuck her head in the sink with water.” She mumbled, bowing her head like she expected Tania to scream hell. Instead, she burst into a fit of laughter.
Nina’s mouth was agape. “Why are you laughing?”
She swallowed. “You don’t think it is funny? You had your boss’s ass beat! I didn’t even have that much balls when I worked briefly with sassy Andrea. You are a force to reckon with, no doubt. I salute your bravery.” She cackled.
“It’s not funny.” Nina pouted.
Tania cleared her throat and stretched out her hand to rub her back. “I am sorry. I understand you. Don’t be mad. Let’s do it this way. Since it’s the weekend, we can eat brunch out and discuss what to do; if you need to send an apology letter or meet with her face to face, we can decide. First thing first, it is important we get out of here. What do you think?”
She glanced back at the house and took in a deep breath. “Alright then. Let’s go.”
“Thanks, ma’am.” She teased. “Do you think you can drive?”
A grin spread out on Nina’s face. “I get you.” She said, turning on the ignition.
