Something fishy
Chapter 49 Something Fishy
X&J EMPIRE, NEW YORK. “You had your things brought to work?” Jace asked Xander as he walked towards the car to drop him off at the airport. He had insisted on coming to work that morning when he could have just stayed home and gotten ready for his trip. Xander grunted in response, dialing Nina. “Why is she not picking?” “Because she has something to do. She is probably in a meeting or something. Didn’t you say your goodbyes early this morning?” “I just want to let her know I am leaving.” “You can always call her when you get to your destination. Stop dropping calls like you might be joining your forefathers soon. And please call your driver to drop you off at the airport. Whenever you travel, it’s stressful for me, and I have to do the drop-off.” “Are you admitting that you will miss me?” “Oh, please don’t get ahead of yourself.” Jace snorted, pulling his face away as he hurried to the car. Xander chuckled. “Hey, you don’t have to walk me to the car.” He said, turning to Dawn, who had been exceptionally quiet. Dawn smiled weakly. She didn’t know how best to react towards him. It’s been over three days since he left her alone at the dinner table for Nina, and he didn’t bother to address it or apologize. “I just want to.” She mumbled. Xander turned when he got to the car and hugged her tightly. “Thanks, D. I will see you when I return in four weeks. The company is in your hands until then.” “No problem. Just be safe. Before I forget, can you give me your phone quickly? I forgot mine in the office. I need to check something.” She said. “Sure.” He replied, handing her the phone absentmindedly while he entered the car. Dawn went to the contact and typed into the search box. Her nose flared at the saved contact. She sure is more special than he is letting on and typing a few words quickly. She made sure it got delivered before deleting the content. “Here you go, baby.” She said, handing him the phone. “Have a safe trip.” “He sure will.” Jace sneered, turning the car ignition. “I don’t know why you put that witch in charge.” “She is the COO for a reason, and this is not the first time. I hope you will act more mature and not have my company’s roof burning when I return.” Xander stated. “I don’t know what you would have me do. You seriously do not think I will keep mute while she comes at me, right?” “You are the man here. Please act like it.” “I am sorry to disappoint you. I will not sit still to please anyone. That is a promise.” Xander laughed, turning his face to the window. He had some business to handle in Spain and Greece, and each would require two weeks for him to spend there. Xander would have preferred to send someone else on his behalf for Nina’s sake if there was a chance. However, she wouldn’t like it if he did that and might be angry at him. “Jace.” He called out. Jace kept his eyes on the road and hummed in response. He is always super focused when driving. For a reckless person like him, one would think Jace plays every aspect of his life recklessly. “Can you do me a favor?” Xander continued. “Like helping you keep a close eye on Nina? Attending to her every need and let you know if she needs anything.” He read off; head still focused on the road. “How-how did you know what I would say?” “Come on, bro. It was the first thing you read me like a mantra when you called me this morning. I would be foolish to forget something like that so easily. And do not worry; Carla, Tania, and I will look after her.” “Please do. Nina is in her last trimester, and I have read that it can be quite demanding.” Jace glanced sideways at his brother, and he could see the worried lines on his forehead. He nudged him on the side. “Chill out, Xan. You won’t lose her again this time. I will make sure of that.” He assured, and that put a resting smile on Xander’s face. ~~~~~~ Dawn gnashed her teeth against each other as she stomped back to her office. Picking up the phone, she dialed her assistant, Selina. “Call me the department’s in charge of the package food section.” She instructed, hanging up. Her breath hitched as she kept pacing the room back and forth. If Xander thinks he can easily make a fool of her and get away with it, he has another thing coming. All through that night, he left her; she couldn’t sleep a wink as she kept staring at her phone, hoping he would call her. It’s probably Nina’s doing; she must have advised him against calling her back. Xander would naturally put a call through to her and apologize; he wouldn’t even mind asking how he could make it up to her. But now everything has changed since Nina returned to his life. It is why Dawn has decided to do what she considers proper. The door opened, letting in the head of departments. “You called for us, ma’am.” They chorused. “When do you intend to submit the reports for the next production line?” Dawn asked. The head of production responded. “We are meant to have a meeting by tomorrow for approval. With Mr Jackson’s absence, we would have you sign it.” “Alright. I want every document signed by the CEO since the inception of the food package sector in my mail by the end of today.” She instructed. They responded in unison and excused themselves. Dawn’s lips quivered as she clenched her fist tightly. Now she would see just how long it would take the said Nina to break.
