Only one
I had not seen Chris for some good time and was quite happy to see him. There was a person I knew in the room. I could even dance with him and try to have fun though I had already started regretting why I’d come.
“Chris?”
He was seated lazily on a couch looking really miserable. Guess he was high already yet I hadn’t drunk anything. This looked like the only party I wasn’t going to enjoy. I always had my friends in all the parties I had attended.
“Hey, where have you been?” He said getting up and hugging me. He reeked of alcohol so I pulled away really fast.
“I should be asking you that question.”
“Oh you were so busy messing up with Ross that you didn’t even bother to ask about me,” That hurt but I let it slide. It was not the right time for confrontation.
“I’m asking now.”
“My class had a study trip which lasted a week. Just got back today.” He eyed me. “So how come you’re here. Who brought you?”
“My roommate,” I said matter of factly.
“He is such a gentleman,” Chris said, sarcastically. “Why didn’t he show you around? I’m sure you haven’t been in this house before.”
“I’m going to get a drink,” I told him and went to find something.
We were now dancing together. We had both had something to drink so getting close didn’t bother me at all. I had not seen Alec since I got into the house and I was pretty worried. I knew he was fine but felt like seeing him. Maybe even dance with him. I kept looking around but he was nowhere to be seen. What could he be doing? Hope it wasn’t what I was thinking.
Chris noticed my discomfort and he stopped dancing.
“You seem out of it? What’s wrong, Lynn?”
“Uh nothing, I’m okay.”
“I also came here with someone but I can’t see her,” He seemed to read my mind. “Help me find her as you look out for Alec.”
“Let’s go,” I said, dragging him out of the sweaty mass of bodies. “Who is she?”
I asked when we got to the stairs. It was hard to climb up with a poor coordination.
“She’s called Janet and this is the first house party she attended,” Chris said. “I was supposed to be there for her but she left me saying she wanted to have fun to the max so I let her wander.”
“Okay,” We looked around the washrooms only. We didn’t want to try the bedrooms because we would only be disgusted.
“Hey, have you seen Jan?” Chris asked a girl we met. They seemed to know each other.
“Yeah, she’s on the last bedroom on this very hallway.”
“Thanks,” Chris waved her off as we hurried. We found her passed out on a bed.
“What are we gonna do with her?” I asked Chris.
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe you can watch over her since we can’t lock the room. What if someone came in and molested her?” I told him and rushed out before he started pleading with me to stay with him. I had to find my roommate as soon as possible.
Outside, I stared at the building. It was really huge and I wondered how only one family could enjoy living in such a big mansion. Ethan had told me that the family had only two sons.
I realized Alec’s car wasn’t among the ones parked in the yard. How was I getting back home? The other boys could party for the whole night for all I cared. To get a cab, I had to first get out of the rich people’s neighborhood which was very large. I was screwed. I pulled out my phone to call him.
He didn’t answer. I knew he wouldn’t so I just had to walk till I found a cab.
Alec was in the room seated on the couch and watching Alien Resurrection. He looked completely fine not like someone who had alcohol in their system. He clearly didn’t drink anything.
“Hi,” I said.
“Hi Lynn,” He said in a low tone. I could tell he wasn’t fine. What could have happened? I felt sad but had no time to comfort him since I was terribly hungry. Besides, I needed to take a shower and brush my teeth.
I did all that in the next few minutes then ordered pizza. I joined Alec for the movie though I was sure he didn’t want me there. I couldn’t leave him all alone in his condition.
There are times you really need someone to lean on. He didn’t say anything when I sat next to him on the couch. His eyes were focused on the screen.
I was thinking about him and not caring if he noticed that I wasn’t paying attention to the movie or no. My pizza was delivered soon enough and we shared each of us saying nothing to each other.
This was comfortable silence but it would be better if he said something.
“I’m sorry, Alec.”
“It’s fine.”
This was not good. I moved closer to him and touched his strong arm.
“Thanks Alec,” I said.
“It’s not really fine,” I looked up to see a mischievous grin on his face. How did his mood just change so fast?
“How do I make this fine?”
“One condition.”
“What’s it?”
“That you sleep with me, I’m so miserable”
What the… I wanted him fine but gosh, I wasn’t ready for that.
“Alec-”
“Shut up,” He smiled weakly. “I don’t mean we should have sex. Just sleep next to me. Nothing will happen I promise.”
“Unless you want,” He added, winking.
I pretended to consider the proposal for a second because automatically I was going to say yes. Cuddling with Alec for a full night wasn’t something I could afford to miss. I knew he wouldn’t try anything.
“It’s fine,” I concluded.
“I knew you would say yes,” He chuckled and turned off the Television.
“Shut up,” I couldn’t help but smile.
I trusted him.
