At the call of the moon

chapter 18

Lexa ran for two days, which seemed to pass in a split second, so focused was she on her goal: finding Jake’s trail. She had smelled his scent earlier in the day, and despite her bleeding feet she had sped up, more determined than ever. The stronger the smell, the more her anger grew, causing her fangs to sink. He was there, close, she could smell him and it was driving her crazy. A small voice whispered repeatedly in her head: Vengeance… Vengeance… And from hissing, the voice changed to a roar: Vengeance!

Suddenly, she sensed his presence, painfully familiar. Eyes blazing with rage, she spun around and finally faced him. He raised his arms in a sign of appeasement, whispering:

– Take it easy… Take it easy, Lexa. You don’t really want to hurt me, I know that. So calm down, you’ll be fine.

She jumped on him, growling:

– you don’t know anything, Jake, nothing at all!

All claws out, she landed on him, plowing his face, tracing bloody furrows there. He grabbed her wrists and made them roll on the side, but seeing that she was going to succeed in freeing herself, he unleashed a punch that parted the girl’s lip. She broke free and took all her anger out on him, kicking him hard. When at last some of her anger was released, she pinned him down, straddling him. There , finally , tears rolling down her cheeks , dewy from Jake ‘s blood that had splattered her face , She released all her vibrations . The air filled with its waves, so strong that they were suffocating, and tinged with shimmering gold. Jake widened his swollen, bloody eyes as wide as he could at the sight. He managed to articulate, spitting blood in the process:

– I knew you were perfect… You are perfect for ME.

She shook her head, sending pink droplets around her. She tightened her grip on his wrists, sending a jerk there.

– You know NOTHING, Jake. Nothing . (The tears started to flow even harder as she collapsed next to him, her voice cracking) Why?! Why ? How could you do this to us? How could you kill Nia? And Keith? They were your best friends too! They loved you and trusted you!

No trace of remorse was visible in the young man’s swollen eye sockets. Lexa was disgusted more than anything else: how had she seen a future by his side. How could she… had loved him? He gave her the smile that once comforted her, but now sent shivers down her spine.

– I didn’t mean to hurt them, Lexie-Lex. They were just in my way. All I wanted was to have you, and together we were the biggest pack this country has ever known. I wanted to make you my alpha female, and your cub toy my beta, but you ruined it. You –

He didn’t have time to finish his sentence that she ripped open his throat, collapsing under the weight of rage and pain.
