Chapter 0069
"Sam, there's no need to defend your boss! I know exactly how he treats me," Mia replied coolly.
If Hunter really cared enough to ask Sam about her grandmother's condition, he would have known about her frequent episodes of unconsciousness. But he had never brought up the new medication on his own. It was clear Sam was just trying to smooth things over "And as for Mr. Jasper and Miss Walker..." Sam began, only to be cut off by Hunter's voice snapping from the car, "Get to driving and quit with the useless talk! Hurry up and get Mia in here!"
Sam sighed. It seemed he wouldn't be able to do any more damage control today.
Mia couldn't help but smile at Sam's frustrated expression. "Everyone in Haven City knows all about Hunter and Jenna's relationship. Trying to clean up his reputation is pointless!"
Hunter sat in the driver's seat with his gaze locked on Mia. She actually smiled at Sam! For some reason, a surge of irritation rose up inside him.
Hearing Mia's remark, Sam realized just how deep the misunderstandings between them ran. Bridging that gap wouldn't be something he could accomplish in a day or two. Thinking it over, he finally said, "One day, you'll understand." He would think of ways to help them in the future.
Mia chuckled. "You're really Hunter's devoted assistant, aren't you? I bet you've smoothed things over with plenty of sweet talk on his behalf with Jenna!"
Sam quickly waved his hands. "No, no! I've never done that!"
Sam had only ever bought gifts for Miss Walker on Hunter's behalf and sweet talk was out of the question. Hunter would never be one for romantic words with her. It was simply his way of compensating, nothing more.
"Relax, even if you had, I wouldn't know about it! Please take my car back, and I'll head out." Before Hunter could say anything else, Mia opened the car door to get in, only to hear his voice as she was about to sit down. "Mia, do you really think I'm your chauffeur?"
Mia muttered a quiet curse under her breath, rolled her eyes, and slammed the door shut. She walked around to the passenger seat, opened the door, and got in, Putting on a polite, distant expression, she said, "Thank you, Mr. Jasper."
Hunter turned slightly to look at her. Even from the side, she was strikingly beautiful.
After a moment of silence, Mia glanced over and found him staring at her. Their eyes met.
"Yes, Mr. Jasper? Is something wrong?" Her tone was polite yet distant.
Hunter felt a twinge of irritation and let out a cold scoff, suddenly leaning toward her.
Mia instinctively covered her mouth, her back straightening. "Hunter, what are you trying to do?"
He reached over, pulled the seatbelt across her, and buckled it in place. "Just putting on your seatbelt. Why are you so jumpy? Or... were you hoping for a little backseat action here?" His tone was dripping with
sarcasm.

Mia's face flushed a deep red as she shot him a sharp glare. "Who asked you to help with my seatbelt?! can do it myself!"
If anyone ever caught her in the car with Hunter like that, the rumors would explode online. She would be labeled a shameless seductress, accused of throwing herself at Hunter. And if any of Hunter's crazed fans got hold of her information, she would be endlessly harassed and vilified.
Her reputation, her career and even her safety could be destroyed. She might not even be able to show her face in Haven City,
Hunter only smirked in response to her glare. "What's this? Did I hit a nerve, Mrs. Jasper? You seem pretty flustered," he said, starting the engine with a trace of amusement in his voice.
Mia turned her head to look out the window, taking a deep breath to calm herself. She decided it was best to ignore him entirely.
