Chapter 9
Chapter 9
If the day of her miscarriage was the most painful day of her life, today was definitely the most unbelievable day of her life.
She’d gotten a divorce just moments ago, yet she was getting married again right now—with Christopher, no less.
Christopher belonged to the Wayne Family. The Waynes are all assh*les. Diane had been telling herself that very sentence since she was a little girl.
Years ago, Old Madam Wayne beat up her parents badly with a feather duster, and the sight of it had left a scar like no other in her childhood; she could never forget that harrowing experience.
As the memory flooded back into her mind, she took a deep breath and pulled her hand away from Christopher’s grip.
“I can’t marry you.”
“Give me a reason.”
Christopher was frowning slightly; his eyes were cold and unfriendly.
“What could it be? Getting married is not child’s play. Besides, why do you even want to marry me? Is getting married such an easy decision for someone like you?”
Diane turned to leave the bureau as she spoke, her eyes darting toward the line of people by the marriage registration counter as she did so.
Norman and Stella were standing close together in line; they were so immersed in their own happiness that they
didn’t even notice Diane’s eyes on them.
“I need a wife, and you need a husband who will stand up for you. It’s that simple.”
His words rang confidently in her ear, and Diane spaced out momentarily. The man before her was a little taller than 6 feet. He had a set of defined brows and his eyes were a pleasant, oval shape. He was extremely handsome and attractive, and he was a direct descendant of the Wayne Family. According to gossip and entertainment news, his net worth was at least tens of billions. Someone like him emanated a certain dignified charm; she was curious as to how Norman and Stella would feel if they saw her getting married to a man like this.
In just a few seconds, everything clicked in Diane’s mind.
At that moment, Christopher reached out to her; she didn’t hesitate this time and simply placed her hand in his palm.
Christopher wasn’t fond of queues, so he brought her straight to the Head of Bureau’s office on the second floor. Approximately 10 minutes later, a freshly printed marriage certificate was in Diane’s hand.
With a divorce certificate in her left hand and a marriage certificate in her right, it was indeed an eventful day for Diane.
“Whatever it is between us—is it considered a trade, Mr. Wayne?”
When they left the bureau, Diane waved the paper in her right hand while Christopher casually stuffed his copy of it in his pocket. He gave her a brief glance before he took out his wallet and retrieved a gold credit card from within.
“Here’s your allowance. I don’t have any requests from you at the moment, but there’s one condition…”
He paused as his eyes became dark with warning. “No cheating.”
Diane was taken by surprise and almost choked herself. “Don’t worry, Mr. Wayne. You’re such an incredible husband that my eyes are already blinded; I’m not even going to look anywhere else.”
She coughed to ease her choking as she swiftly accepted the credit card from his hand.
Considering their close relationship when they were kids… In a way, they could be considered best friends who knew each other through and through, right? However, she wondered if he even remembered her at all.
As her mind pondered over that doubt, Christopher said to her, “I still have something to deal with, so I’ll be leaving first. Find your own way home and try to move in as soon as possible.”
With those parting words, Christopher left; he ditched her alone on the streets without even saying goodbye.
Sure enough, he had married her simply out of mutual benefit—he wasn’t even planning to show her a hint of chivalry. Diane mumbled complaints toward the leaving man’s figure before she took another look at the gold credit card in her hand. The exquisite-looking card gleamed so brightly under the sunlight that she was almost blinded by it.
She didn’t know if this sudden leap of faith was the right move or not, but one thing was for sure—she had officially become Christopher’s wife. Even though it was a superficial relationship of equal exchange, it was the truth on paper.
Now, she was officially Mrs. Wayne.
As she looked up at the sky, she realized that it was still early; she took her time to go home. Since the divorce had left her practically empty-handed, she had nothing much to pack. However, she still had to return to collect her clothes and personal belongings.
With that, she returned to the home that once belonged to her and Norman. Back then, they could only afford the first floor as they were pretty broke. Just as she arrived at the door, something unexpectedly came flying at her face.
