Anderson removed his suit jacket and approached the couch to cover Mayra’s exposed legs. She was wearing a school uniform skirt, and he made sure she was covered to avoid any embarrassment.
“Mayra, i have my reasons for doing this. I kept things from you because I don’t want you to get involved,” Anderson explained, but Mayra remained silent.
“Mayra, let me tell you a story. Twenty–three years ago, a little boy was born into a large family. They could have lived happily ever after, but one day, the boy’s father brought in a woman,
“This woman tore apart the family and tried to drive away the boy’s mother. Facing pressure from the family, the boy’s father couldn’t divorce his wife as he wished.
“Eventually, the boy’s father left with the woman, leaving the boy and his mother behind. 12 years later, the woman had a child and wanted to replace the boy’s
mother.
“One day, an accident happened when the boy and his mother returned to her family. A huge explosion killed over a hundred people, and the fire raged for three days and nights. The boy’s mother’s family lost everything valuable, and the boy lost all his important relatives.
“He watched his mother die in the fire, and he barely escaped death himself. Finally, a kind couple rescued him. The husband was a cab driver, and the wife was eight months pregnant…”
Mayra already knew what happened next. The kind couple Anderson spoke of were her parents.
Quietly, Mayra continued to listen to Anderson. “Step by step, the boy sought revenge. After gaining power, he discovered that the woman had arranged for someone to be with him, and it was the child she had with another man…
“She wanted to use her daughter to achieve her goal of entering the boy’s family… Mayra, I just want to know Hailey’s intentions of staying with me.”
Anderson had never mentioned his background to anyone, and Mayra had never expected him to tell her all this in such detail. But what Anderson said mostly matched what Mayra had guessed.
Over the years, Anderson had struggled, even spending 13 years in hiding. Each time, he escaped from the killers with his life hanging by a thread.
Anderson camed too much burden, and at the thought of this, Mayra softened.
“Even so, you can’t betray Isa,” Mayra said.
Anderson felt something indescribable in his chest when he heard Myra’s words that were spoken only for Isabel’s sake.
He replied, “Mayra, is that how I am in your eyes? If you don’t like her, I’ll relocate her
tomorrow,”
“I heard everything. You want to keep her and give her five million dollars to be your mistress…” Mayra’s voice was muffled and soft but clear enough for Anderson to hear.
She did see everything. A glint flashed in Anderson’s eyes.
“I’ll support you too. And from now on, my money will all be for you… Hmm?” Anderson took out his wallet, opening the middle compartment.
Damn, the smell of filthy money.
There was a black card with the card number embossed in gold numbers. It was a string of several eights.
A black card!
In her past life, no matter how much Mayra begged Anderson for it, he never gave it to her. Later, she was infuriated to find out that Anderson had given it to Isabel.
“Is it a lot of money?”
“It can keep you from ever going hungry again.” Anderson’s voice was soft and coaxing.
Mayra’s hand reached out uncontrollably, and she slowly slipped the card into her pocket. As her head was buried in the pillow, her voice sounded muffled. “Andy, I’m not mad at you anymore.”
