In a dimly lit room, the air reeked of blood and alcohol. Blood-soaked gauzes were strewn on a table, and a single bloody bullet rested on a silver tray. A voice broke the silence, “It’s done, Boss!”
Boss, deathly pale and sweating profusely, bit down hard on a rag. He weakly pulled it out of his mouth when he saw his wound had been bandaged.
“What should we do next?” one of the subordinates asked. Another man pointed out that leaving now with Boss’s injured leg would attract even more attention. “We can’t stay here indefinitely. What do we do, Boss?”
“Shut up!” Boss shouted, silencing the two men. He slowly lifted his gaze and glared at them. “Don’t worry. Those guys won’t come looking for us here.” His subordinate insisted that Bloodmoon Pack’s men wouldn’t let them off, to which Boss asked coldly, “Are you saying those at the jetty were all Bloodmoon Pack’s men?”
His subordinates nodded. “We’ve sparred with them plenty of times, and their leader is none other than the younger brother of Bloodmoon Pack’s assistant,” they said, before adding it was a shame they didn’t get to finish him off this time.
Boss’s gaze darkened. “It looks like they’ve put in a lot of effort to deal with me, huh?” he scoffed. His subordinates grew nervous and asked what to do, as failing their mission would be difficult to explain to the general.
Boss pondered for a moment, then curled his lips into a sneer. “Since things have gotten to this point, I suppose it’s time for me to play hardball. J, I’ll make sure you lose everything you cherish!” He turned to his subordinates. “I want you guys to prepare for our return trip. Leave the rest to me!”
With the subordinates gone, Boss picked up the phone and made a call. “Hello?” he said. Hearing the familiar voice on the other end, Boss’s eyes lit up with a devilish gleam. “Ms. Jackson, it’s already so late. Why are you still up?”
“I’m sure you didn’t call me at this hour just to ask some nonsense question,” she retorted bluntly. Boss burst out laughing. “What’s with that tone, Ms. Jackson? You don’t sound as friendly as you did when we met the other day.” She replied that he was still as long-winded as before.
“I’m not interested in that. What I’m interested in is why you’re looking for me,” he said with a smirk. She replied, “In that case, I shall cut to the chase. Ms. Jackson, Theodore Jackson is your father, isn’t he?”
Nelly froze. Hearing her father’s name from a stranger was exciting, but she kept her composure. “Do you know my father?”
“Yes, I do. We used to be very close too!” Boss replied. Nelly asked if that was so, to which Boss said that despite being so close, he never knew Theodore had a daughter because of how well he had protected her.
“If I’m not wrong, you’re investigating the cause of his death, aren’t you?” Boss asked. Recognizing his strategy, Nelly cut to the chase. “It sounds like you know how he died!” For a moment, Boss was stunned by her intelligence.
“Why? Are you surprised?” Nelly asked with a coldness in her voice.
Boss laughed. “Yes, I am. Like father, like daughter. Theodore’s daughter certainly stands out!”
“Save your pleasantries,” Nelly insisted. “We may not know each other well, but there’s no need for this show of courtesy!”
“Ms. Jackson, you seem to reject kindness easily!”
“I never reject acts of kindness unless they’re not genuine.”
Boss fell silent for a few seconds. “If that’s the case, let’s skip the pleasantries and talk about how we can work together.”
“I’m listening.”
With Zaewora being so big, finding the truth about your father’s death is like finding a needle in a haystack. It has been over two decades since he passed, so your chances of finding the truth are slim to none without help.”
“So?”
“So, I can take you to Midnight Fang Pack to search for the truth.”
“In other words, you’re suggesting that the murderer is in Midnight Fang Pack and I can only get in there with your help?”
“Yes!”
A smile appeared on Nelly’s face. “And what about you? Are you only interested in that document?” “Yes!”
“Okay, got it.”
“Well, will you consider this deal, Ms. Jackson?” Boss asked. “No need. Contact me again when you’re back in Zaewora.”
With that, she ended the call.
Boss still held the phone in his hand as he looked out the window, a dark glint flashing in his amber eyes.
Moments later, he curled his lips and turned to his subordinates outside. “Book the flight tickets immediately. I want to head back as soon as possible.”
At four in the morning, a car stopped outside Nelly’s residential block. Alpha Kilian glanced at one of the upstairs units before opening the door and stepping out of the car.
Seeing this, Fabian quickly turned off the engine and joined him.
However, to his surprise, Alpha Kilian didn’t go upstairs. Instead, he leaned against the car and stared wistfully at the building.
Though puzzled, Fabian also looked up.
After a while, he turned to Alpha Kilian. “What are you looking at?” Alpha Kilian glanced at Fabian, snapping out of his trance. “Do you have a cigarette?”
Alpha Kilian rarely smoked, and when he did, it was usually when he had something on his mind or had been through a lot.
Despite being shocked, Fabian quickly smiled. “Oh, I do! Here,” he said, handing the packet of cigarettes to Alpha Kilian.
Alpha Kilian twirled the packet around his fingers and lazily raised his eyes after taking out a cigarette. “Are these imported?”
“Yes,” Fabian replied with a nod.
“Well, well, well. Your taste is getting better!” Alpha Kilian mused, placing the cigarette in his mouth.
Without hesitation, Fabian lit the cigarette with his lighter. Alpha Kilian glanced at him, a smile playing on his lips.
“The company that asked for my help during the bidding exercise gave me these cigarettes,” Fabian explained.
“Is that so?”
“Yes. Remember? Alpha Smith, the southerner!” Alpha Kilian nodded, recognizing the name.
“He sent me a small box of these cigarettes,” Fabian added. “There are more than twenty packets in it!”
Alpha Kilian chuckled. “That’s very generous of him! I can give you a few packets if you like, Alpha Morris!”
Taking a few puffs and tapping off the ash, Alpha Kilian replied, “No, it’s fine. I’m not a big fan of it.” “So why are you…” Fabian began, but his voice trailed off.
Once again, Alpha Kilian looked up at the building, his forehead creased with concern.
For some inexplicable reason, he had felt restless all night, as if something was about to happen.
That’s why he decided to stop by Nelly’s place, even at such a late hour. “I’m feeling troubled,” Alpha Kilian said softly.
“Did you argue with the soon-to-be Mrs. Morris?”
Alpha Kilian glanced at Fabian, retracting his gaze. “Can’t you say something more positive?”
“Oh, come on. I see that look in your eyes. It worries me,” Fabian retorted.
“Heh. Worry about yourself instead,” Alpha Kilian scoffed. “You’ve never dated, yet you always act like a relationship expert!”
“Who said that?” Fabian stuttered. “I’ve been in relationships before…”
“What? Are you talking about the little girl who kissed you when you were a kid?”
“Alpha Morris, that’s a personal attack!” Fabian grumbled. “I may not have much real-world experience, but I have ample theoretical knowledge!”
