Chapter 49 Love Dictated His Mood
The moment those words left his mouth, he pressed his lips to Diane’s pale, trembling lips once again.
His fierce kiss was like a storm that instantly rained down on Diane, drowning her in the process.
Meanwhile, she was immobilized from being pinned down on the couch by Christopher’s large frame.
She couldn’t move and had no leeway at all, so the only thing she could do was to let him do as he
wished.
Soon, her clothes were ripped off her. His hands roamed across her body, devoid of any warmth or
gentleness like blocks of ice. Wherever he touched felt chilly, and she would shiver inadvertently.
After struggling for a bit, Diane no longer had the strength to continue the fight, but just as she was
about to give up struggling and accept her fate, Christopher’s phone suddenly rang from where it was
on the table.
The man above her froze, and then he picked up the phone.
“What is it, Queenie?”
The moment that his mood changed, an unstoppable dull ache hit Diane’s heart.
“It’s all right. There’s nothing to be afraid of, and I’ll be there soon.”
Compared to his earlier violence against Diane, the man was a completely different person when it
came to Queenie. He proved that steel could turn into silken softness.
Christopher continued to pin her down, and the suffocating feeling in Diane’s heart was intensifying.
Taking advantage of his lapse in attention as he answered his phone, she shoved Christopher hard.
“Miss Hayworth is looking for you. You should go over,” Diane coldly reminded him. Christopher
glanced at her, and then he actually eased up.
As she breathed a sigh of relief, Diane felt sorrow and self-deprecation.
Considering how she urged her own husband to spend the night with another woman, there was
probably no one else in the world who was less of a wife than she was. Indeed, this marriage should
come to an end.
After all, wouldn’t it be a terrible sin to ruin their happiness?
A self-mocking smile appeared on Diane’s lips, but she didn’t say anything. She sat up and tidied her
clothes which had been ripped off by Christopher.
Christopher stood before Diane; he was tidying his own clothes when his gaze swept over her absent-
mindedly.
When he caught sight of Diane’s self-deprecating smile, his eyes darkened. As he picked up his phone
from the table, he said, “Queenie woke up from a nightmare. I’m going to see her, so come with me.”
Diane’s hands stiffened while she was buttoning up her clothes, and she lifted her head to stare at
Christopher. After a long moment, she finally said with an insincere smile, “Are you not afraid of ruining
the mood by bringing this lowly wife of yours along when you’re visiting another woman?”
Christopher looked at her, his eyes devoid of emotion. “The nurse that Scott got a few days ago isn’t all
that good, and he can’t find another decent one on such short notice. Just put up with it for a few days.”
At those words, Diane’s forced smile froze as well.
“You’re saying that I’m to serve her instead?”
“You’re supposed to care for her,” Christopher corrected her and said, but his expression was icy with
an undercurrent of a threat.
“Hah!” Diane couldn’t stop herself from chuckling coldly. “I’ve only met Miss Hayworth twice. Aren’t you
worried that I’d end up making her condition worse under my care?”
What was wrong with her? Why couldn’t she stifle her anger? Why did she suddenly become like a
prickly porcupine when she should be putting a lid on her emotions and going along with his whims?
Forget it. I should stop arguing with him, Diane thought after a myriad of thoughts rushed through her
mind. Before Christopher could speak again, she lowered her head and quickly said, “If you’re making
me go, then I will. She did take a bullet for me, after all. I’ve got nothing else to say about that, for this
is something I should do.”
“As long as you know it.”
The quick change in attitude didn’t make Christopher change his own; his expression was as icy as
ever, and his tone was still as harsh.
Having said that, he turned and left. Diane straightened out her clothes and took a deep breath before
following him out the door.
They both took the same car to the hospital, but neither of them spoke along the way. Christopher was
solely focused on driving, and his gaze was fixed on the road ahead. Meanwhile, Diane sat in the back.
She looked outside without making a sound as well; this continued until they reached their destination.
After alighting from the car, Christopher walked into the hospital with hasty steps. Diane had to jog to
keep up with him.
The lights were on when they got to Queenie’s room in the VIP ward. Queenie sat up in her bed,
propped up against the pillows. There were traces of tears on her face, and Diane could tell with one
look that Queenie had cried not long ago.
The moment she saw Christopher, Queenie’s tears rolled down her face again. Her voice was all
choked up as she lowered her head with a hand pressed to her lips. She looked like a pitiful Victorian
woman out of a novel.
“Christopher…”
“What’s wrong? Why aren’t you sleeping well and crying at such a late hour?”
It was that soft and concerned tone again. It made Diane, who had just reached the door, abruptly stop
right in her tracks.
Why should she even go in there? She would end up ruining the chemistry between the man with his
kindness and the woman with her fragility.
Still, she was an adult. She was soon discovered by the weeping Queenie just from standing there.
“Diane?” Queenie called affectionately as her brows furrowed. “It’s late. Why are you here?”
Diane thought the question was odd. On paper, Christopher was still her husband. With him being
called here in the middle of the night, wasn’t it normal for her as his wife to be there as well?
Perhaps Queenie thought it was strange.
Diane gave a cold chuckle mentally. She followed Christopher’s instructions and replied blandly, “He
said that your nurse isn’t all that great, so he wants me to take care of you over the next few days.”
“You?” Queenie froze for a moment and looked at Christopher. “Christopher, this isn’t a joke, right?”
“It’s not. She’s good at small matters like this. There’s nothing else she can do anyway.”
She was a regular person, unlike Queenie and her well-educated, high-born status. Hence, all Diane
could do was serve others.
“He’s right. This is just a simple matter; it’s not something that’s impossible to do. Besides, you saved
me. This is something I should do, or I’ll feel like I owe you. It’s best that we don’t keep that debt
hanging between us. What do you say, Mr. Wayne?”
Christopher turned his head from where he stood by Queenie’s bed, meeting Diane’s gaze as she
smiled lightly.
On the other hand, Diane was utterly calm; she was so calm that it seemed like she didn’t have a heart
at all.
She wanted not to owe them both? In her dreams!
“You’re right. Okay then—since you’re here, help Queenie get a glass of milk. Milk calms the nerves, so
you should go to sleep after drinking it, Queenie.” Christopher turned his attention to Queenie once
again, his expression regaining that softness once more. Meanwhile, Queenie looked at him before
looking at Diane again. She wanted to say that she didn’t want the milk, but she suddenly changed her
tune just as she was about to speak.
“Sure. Still, I’m really sorry for causing more trouble for you.”
She had directed those words to Christopher. He then sat down and tucked in the corners of her
covers. “This is something I should do since you saved me. Besides, we don’t need to talk about that
considering our relationship,” he said evenly.
“No, we should. It’s true that I’m being too stubborn. I just had a nightmare, and you only got to rest
tonight after a long while. I shouldn’t have called you at this hour. I’m sorry…” Queenie softly spilled her
worries as Christopher gently consoled her. The two of them chatted intimately as though they were the
only ones there in the room.
Meanwhile, Diane gripped the handle of her bag wordlessly. She walked into the room and picked up
the cup by Queenie’s bedside cabinet. The room was like a regular bedroom in a normal house, for
everything else was placed outside.
Diane walked away in search of the milk. She took a packet and poured it inside the cup before placing
it into the microwave. As she watched the microwave work in front of her, bits of Christopher and
Queenie’s conversation drifted into her ears. They got along so well; she had never seen such a
harmonious relationship, for Christopher even let out a laugh.
With how cold and distant he usually was, Diane had never seen him so happy and carefree before.
It was as she thought—love dictated his mood.
Ding.
Soon, the microwave stopped. Diane reined in her emotions and took the cup of milk out before
walking back.
“Miss Hayworth.”
She didn’t even look at Christopher as she walked straight to the bed and handed the cup of milk over.
Having passed the cup to Queenie, Diane loosened her grip on it. Immediately, she heard a cry ringing
out.
